Galyatető: Hiking, Views and Cultural History
Accommodation in Galyatető
Galyatető is well suited to hiking holidays, with views and cultural history also in the spotlight. Several circular hiking routes start from the village. The roads leading to Galyatető offer views towards the Kékes massif. This gives you two different perspectives to consider when planning your trip: circular routes starting in the village and distant views along the access roads.
Hiking and views
The reconstructed Galya lookout tower can be reached from the Galyatető Turistacentrum via a built staircase. The 30-metre-high tower has two stairways with a total of 162 steps. From the 360-degree panoramic terrace, you can see the mountain ranges of Mátra, Bükk and Tátra. Access and visitor conditions may change, so check the current access arrangements before your visit.
The Piszkéstető Observatory can also be included as a place to visit. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. You can reach it via a marked hiking trail or by car. Arrange your visit in advance and check the current access conditions before setting out.
When choosing your outings, you can distinguish between the different options: circular routes start in the village, the Galya lookout tower is reached via a staircase, and the observatory can be visited by prior arrangement.
Culture and practical amenities
The chapel in Galyatető was consecrated in 1941 in honour of Magyarok Nagyasszonya. A commemorative plaque associates Kodály Zoltán with the composition of the Csendes mise near the church. There is a bistro at the Galyatető Turistacentrum, and camping is available at the Turistaház. Check the current bistro offering and camping availability before your trip.
More places of interest in the wider Heves destination
The wider Heves destination offers further natural and cultural points of interest. The Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County. The 16,114-hectare area was designated in 1993; after expansions in 2005 and 2008, it reached its current extent. The 6.5-kilometre Ilona Valley nature trail along the Ilona stream passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. Another hiking reference is the section of the Országos Kéktúra in Heves County, which includes the ascent to Kékestető, the highest point in Hungary. At Kékestető, fans of active tourism can enjoy winter sports in winter.
Cultural and culinary landscapes are also part of this wider region: the Szépasszony Valley is home to Eger’s largest continuous area of wine cellars; wine culture and the gastronomy associated with it are among its most important tourist attractions. Hevesi szőttes is a textile heritage of Heves County and is associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony. In the county programme for 2021, Mátra-Bükk and the area around Lake Tisza are listed as priority tourism areas.
