The wider travel destination of Heves provides a regional setting that brings together landscape, activities and culture. Its highlights range from protected grasslands and geology to mountain hiking and winter sports, as well as wine traditions and textile crafts. These varied themes can be grouped according to whether you are more interested in nature and outdoor activities or in culture and regional traditions.

Landscapes and nature trails in the wider travel destination of Heves

The Hevesi Füves Puszták Landscape Protection Area lies in the southern part of Heves County. It covers 16,114 hectares, was designated in 1993, and reached its current extent after expansions in 2005 and 2008. This sequence shows that both the original designation and later expansions contributed to the protected area’s present size. As a landscape destination, it sits alongside nature trails that focus on specific natural and cultural aspects of the region.

The 6.5-kilometre Ilona Valley nature trail along the Ilona Stream passes geological features of the Eastern Mátra Mountains and traces of former ore mining. Geology and mining history are its joint focus. The Pély-Ludas nature trail offers a different perspective: it introduces the grassland habitats of the Hevesi Plain, including saline grasslands, marshes, bodies of water, shrubland, semi-natural woodland and forests. The wildlife and the European roller population are also among its topics. Comparing the two trails therefore lets you distinguish between geological and mining-history themes on the one hand, and habitats and wildlife on the other.

Mountains and outdoor activities in Heves

Kékestető also brings together different activity themes. The section of the Országos Kéktúra in Heves County includes an ascent of this mountain, the highest point in Hungary. In winter, visitors who enjoy active tourism can take part in winter sports at Kékestető. The regional options therefore include both a route that specifically mentions an ascent and a seasonal winter-sports theme, which you can consider separately according to your interests. In 2021, Heves County was one of the priority tourism areas in the Mátra-Bükk tourism region; this refers to the regional planning framework at that time.

Wine and textile culture

The Szépasszony Valley in Eger includes the city’s largest continuous area of wine-cellar-lined vineyards. Wine culture and its associated gastronomy are among its most important tourist attractions. This focus therefore connects a clearly defined cultural landscape with culinary themes. Hevesi szőttes adds a textile-heritage perspective from Heves County. It is associated with Heves, Mátraderecske and Bodony. Wine traditions and textile crafts thus represent different forms of regional culture: one is an area known for its wine and gastronomy, while the other is a textile heritage linked to three places.

When planning your trip, you can weigh these themes according to your interests: the two nature trails differ in their subject matter, while Kékestető features both as an ascent destination and as a winter-sports destination. For a cultural focus, wine and textile traditions can be considered as separate themes.
