Fegyvernek: Holt-Tisza and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Fegyvernek
Fegyvernek combines a water-shaped landscape with striking examples of religious and historic architecture. The town therefore offers different points of interest for planning your trip: you can explore the possibilities at Holt-Tisza, take in the buildings, or combine the two.
Waterside scenery and leisure at Holt-Tisza
Alsóréti Holt-Tisza was formed in 1856, when a natural riverbed developed as a result of the 74th Tisza cut-off. It lies along the administrative boundaries of Fegyvernek, Nagykörű, and Törökszentmiklós. Its history is thus tied to a specific year and a particular Tisza cut-off.
The Holt-Tisza, which extends into Fegyvernek, offers opportunities for fishing, walking, and relaxing on the banks. These activities offer different ways to spend your time: a visit to the water can combine exercise with a more peaceful break on the banks. If you choose Fegyvernek as your destination, you can include an interest in the water in your plans without limiting your stay to just one activity.
Statue, church, and Gothic monument
In Fegyvernek-Szapárfalu, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands on Main Road 4, between kilometer markers 128 and 129. The statue was erected in 1775 in the Baroque style. The statue group includes a protective brick structure: its floor plan is triangular, as are its pillars, and its tent-shaped roof is covered with shingles. The combination of the Baroque statue and its clearly described protective structure gives the site a distinctive architectural accent.
The Fegyverneki Reformed Church is located on Fegyvernek’s main road and is oriented along an east-west axis. A gate and an entrance hall stand in front of the eastern main façade. A tower with a pyramidal spire stands at the northern corner of the hall; an extension housing the liturgical space adjoins its west side. The east-west orientation and the differently designed sides can be considered together as spatial features of the church.
Pusztatorony is another historic building. The Gothic monument in Fegyvernek was built around 1480. While the statue of St. John of Nepomuk is associated with the year 1775 and the Baroque style, Pusztatorony points to a considerably earlier construction date and a different architectural period.
Weighing up interests when planning your trip
Horse riding may also be of interest when exploring Fegyvernek: Németh tanya on the edge of town is recommended for people interested in horse riding and trail rides. This adds other interests to consider alongside water activities and architectural history.
Regional context
Within the wider destination of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Lake Tisza in the northern part of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County serves as a tourist center. The lake and its surroundings are also among the region’s outstanding areas for cycle tourism. The international EuroVelo II cycle route runs along the Tisza through Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok. These regional points of reference complement the description of the town; the buildings mentioned and the opportunities described at Holt-Tisza relate to Fegyvernek itself.
