Discover Tarján: village history and themed trail
Accommodation in Tarján
Discover Tarján through its architectural history, heritage and everyday culture. The village has a Baroque Roman Catholic church and a Reformed church, as well as the Tájház with its permanent exhibition, a seven-stop themed trail and a cycling route between Tarján and Bicske. These attractions offer different perspectives: architecture and local history, the lives of the local German community, and getting around on foot or by bike.
Architectural history and heritage
The Baroque Roman Catholic church was built between 1779 and 1783 to plans by Jakab Fellner. The Reformed church was built in 1785, and its tower was added in 1825. This sequence distinguishes the construction of the Reformed church from the tower added later. By looking at the two churches, you can place their architectural history in context using these different dates.
Another place of remembrance is a cross-shaped group of 96 gravestones. It commemorates the ancestors who had lived in Tarján since 1737, as well as the religious, ethnic and stonemasonry traditions of their time. Together with the churches, it points to different aspects of local history.
Everyday spaces at the Tájház
Tarján’s Tájház houses a permanent exhibition in a farmhouse built in 1912. It includes a room furnished in period style, a kitchen, a smithy and a pantry. The exhibition extends beyond a single living space: alongside the domestic setting, it also includes a place of work in the form of the smithy. In this way, the Tájház offers a different perspective from the churches and gravestones. Before visiting, it is advisable to check current visitor arrangements.
Themed trail on foot, cycling route between villages
The seven-stop themed trail runs along one of Tarján’s main streets. It presents the history and everyday life, customs, cultural and religious life, mother tongue and present-day life of the local German community. The trail begins at the first information board by the church. With a map, you can follow the route on foot and explore many of the village’s sights along the way. The themed trail thus leads from stop to stop through different aspects of the village’s culture. Before setting out, check whether a map and the information boards are available on site to help you find your way.
For cycling, there is a different way to explore the area: the cycling route connects Tarján and Bicske and passes through the Tarjáni Horgásztó area. This area is popular with runners and cyclists. While the themed trail explores history and local life on foot, the cycling route focuses on the connection between the two villages.
Other local features include several rows of wine cellars in Tarján and its surroundings, including Kis-szállás, Őrhegy and Sövénykert. These cellar rows add another aspect of the local architectural heritage alongside the churches and the Tájház.
When looking for a hotel in Tarján, you can start by setting your travel dates, then decide whether architectural history, an exhibition, or getting around on foot and by bike will be the focus of your stay.
