Várgesztes: Castle, Landscape and Culture
Accommodation in Várgesztes
Várgesztes lies in the valley below Gesztes Castle, at the northwestern corner of the Vértes. When choosing where to stay, the main considerations here are the basin setting, the history of the castle and church, and local cultural traditions. The fishing lake and marked hiking trails are also local landmarks.
Landscape and orientation
The Várgesztes Basin is a small tectonic basin between mountains in the northwestern Vértes. Várgesztes lies in the valley below the castle, while Zsigmond-kő rises above the village. The basin, valley and hill provide different points of reference in the landscape.
Zsigmond Rock can be seen from the shore of the fishing lake; the rock offers a view of Várgesztes and the surrounding landscape. The perspectives differ: from the lakeshore, the rock draws the eye, while from the rock you can look out over the village and its surroundings. The fishing lake is at the entrance to the village. The banks of the Gesztes Stream are also among the local sights, and there are marked hiking trails in Várgesztes.
Castle, church and local history
Gesztes Castle dates from the 14th century and is associated with the time of Sigismund. It is currently being renovated; you can freely walk around the outside, but the interior is not accessible. If you are planning a visit, check access again in advance.
The current church in Várgesztes was built in 1872 on the site of an earlier chapel. Its Neo-Gothic style and location above the valley bring together architectural history and landscape. There is also a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes in a rock niche on the road to Gesztes Castle. The castle, church and statue each offer a different point of interest: medieval history, a later church building and a local religious monument.
Culture and events
The Német Kultúregyesület Várgesztes (German Cultural Association of Várgesztes) was founded in 1991 to preserve the village’s Swabian traditions, songs and dialect. Each year, Várgesztes also commemorates the arrival of Bavarian settlers. These traditions give local culture both a linguistic and musical dimension, as well as a commemorative one.
Csengő-nap is an annual cultural and heritage event that has been held since 1994. Another cultural gathering is tied to August 20 and was launched in 2010. Several groups had already been welcomed as recurring guests on August 26. The events therefore have different associations; if you would like to plan your trip around a cultural event, check the relevant dates for the year of your visit.
Planning your stay
The marked hiking trails, fishing lake and stream banks offer different points of reference from the castle and church; cultural events, in turn, take place on specific dates. Gesztes Castle is currently being renovated; you can freely walk around the outside, but the interior is not accessible. Check access to the castle and event dates before planning your trip.
