Dunaalmás combines hiking opportunities in the western Gerecse with Roman heritage, literary commemoration and a resting place by the water. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, the local themes can help shape your choice of destination: the nature trail focuses on the landscape and its stops, while historic buildings, memorial sites and Kis-sziget appeal to other interests.

Hiking in the western Gerecse

The area around Dunaalmás is well suited to hiking. The Dunaalmási Kőpite-túrakörök nature trail extends for more than 9 km and has 32 stops. Its route follows a former Roman road and passes through old quarries before reaching the summit of Kőpite-hegy. From there, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view in every direction. The stops, the historic route and the viewpoint give the hike a variety of points of interest. Check the route details before setting out.

The Dunaalmási-kőfejtők TT nature reserve is a distinctive feature of the area's natural landscape. It is home to valuable fossil finds and rare protected plant communities, including a species-rich fern forest. Plant populations and ecological conditions can change over time. Alongside the visible quarries, the area also draws attention to fossils and protected vegetation.

Roman history and architecture

The so-called stone transport road runs between Kőpite-hegy and Les-hegy. Built by the Romans, the road is fully preserved and lies in a protected landscape area. Roman slaves used it to transport limestone quarried here. It is considered Hungary's longest known, fully preserved Roman road. The road also highlights the historical use of limestone.

Dunaalmás was already inhabited in Roman times, and remains of the Limes can still be found in the area. Together with the stone transport road, these traces provide several tangible links to Roman heritage: settlement history, the frontier fortification and the transport of limestone quarried locally.

Another building with historical significance is the Baroque Catholic church of Dunaalmás. It was built between 1754 and 1757 and is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. The church and its furnishings are listed as historic monuments. Its construction date, style and dedication offer different ways to appreciate the building.

Literary commemoration and local history

The Csokonai–Lilla Emlékszoba preserves a collection of written and material mementos. These include a portrait believed to depict Lilla. The literary-historical collection has been expanded with local-history and ethnographic objects. The memorial room thus combines literary connections with objects relating to local history and ethnography.

Lilla's grave is another literary point of interest: it is signposted and considered a place of pilgrimage for literature enthusiasts. If you would like to visit, check the signs when you arrive.

A resting place by the Danube and Által-ér

Kis-sziget, enclosed by the Danube and Által-ér, is a resting place by the river and a destination for waterway travelers. It has fire pits, tables and benches. This sets it apart from the hiking and cultural attractions: the focus here is on spending time by the water and the available facilities for taking a break. Facilities and river conditions can change; check their condition before visiting.
