Szügy: Village Museum, Church and Local History
Accommodation in Szügy
Szügy brings together a folk museum and traces of architectural and commemorative history. The Szügyi Falumúzeum offers insights into historic living spaces and objects from everyday village life; the Lutheran church, Simonyi Castle and several memorial sites each add their own historical layers.
The Village Museum and Its Collection
The museum house includes a formal parlour, a kitchen, a rear living room and a cellar. A shed is used to store agricultural equipment. The layout of the rooms and objects from rural everyday life are both among the house’s themes.
The museum preserves more than 600 registered objects, including dolls in folk costumes; the number may change over time. The bridal doll wears a fringed shawl that is nearly 100 years old. Her myrtle wreath is original. Details like these add personal and festive aspects to the collection.
In the courtyard of the Falumúzeum, visitors can try traditional Slovak dishes and take an active part in preparing them. Check the current options before your trip.
A Baroque Church with a Long History of Reconstruction
Szügy’s Lutheran church was built in the Baroque style between 1774 and 1781 and is a protected historic monument. It burned down in 1795, 1823 and 1844; after each fire, the building was rebuilt. The church’s furnishings and history also include a small bell from the 12th century and a spacious gallery supported by four pillars. Its construction period, repeated rebuilding and older bell reflect the different historical layers of the church.
Castle Park and Memorial Sites
The Simonyi family had Simonyi Castle built in 1755 in the late Baroque style. The castle park is a protected nature area. It is home to a red-flowering magnolia that is six metres tall with a crown diameter of five metres; two California redwoods also grow in the park. The estate is privately owned.
The protected Beniczky tomb chapel stands in the cemetery of Alsó-Szügy. Merwaldt Éva had it built in 1799 over the grave of her husband, Beniczky Sámuel. Today, only the chapel’s ruins remain visible.
The Hanzély crypt is on Béke utca, in front of the new cemetery. It was built in the 1890s for Hanzély László and his wife. A monument by Bobály Attila to local people who fell in the First and Second World Wars stands in the square in front of the former county hall. Together with the two burial sites, it shows how buildings and memorials shape different forms of remembrance in Szügy.
Interactive Activities on the Szügyelő
Activities on the Szügyelő also launched on September 24, 2026. In the Felfedező Gallery at the Szügyelő Élmény turistaház, visitors move among hanging illustrated banners, answer questions and solve the game using letters. The Szügyelő’s nature trail has challenges and puzzles at three stations. The solutions reveal the code for a treasure chest at the lookout point; participants can take small gifts. Check in advance whether these activities are currently available.
