Tar offers several specific points of interest to help plan a trip: the Alexander Kőrösi Csoma Memorial Park with its Peace Stupa and pavilion, a meditation centre, and the nature reserve around the Felső-Csevice Spring. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether your trip will focus more on memorial sites and meditation, or on nature and a viewpoint. These places give Tar a clearly defined profile as a travel destination.

Memorial park and meditation

The Peace Stupa was built in the Alexander Kőrösi Csoma Memorial Park in 1992 in memory of Alexander Kőrösi Csoma. It was consecrated by the Dalai Lama. The memorial pavilion in the same park is dedicated to Csoma’s life and work. The park thus combines a place of remembrance with a biographical perspective.

The Tara Tea House is also located in the park. If you plan to visit, check the latest operating details before your trip.

Meditations, rituals, teachings, courses and meditation retreats are held regularly at the meditation centre in Tar. Everyone is welcome to take part in the community’s programmes and activities. If you are planning your trip around a particular programme, check the dates in advance.

Local history and nature

At the ruins of a medieval manor house in Tar, a section of wall is still visible, flanked by two openings where windows once stood. This architectural remnant adds another aspect of local history to the memorial and exhibition themes.

The Felső-Csevice Spring and its surroundings are a nature reserve. From the yellow-marked circular trail beside the information board at the spring, a viewpoint is reached after 200 metres. This distance provides a specific route detail for planning; the section is a short, clearly defined nature stop. Tar therefore brings together different interests: a memorial site and meditation on one hand, and a protected area and viewpoint on the other.

Additional themes in the wider destination of Neuburg

The wider destination of Neuburg also offers other cultural and landscape highlights. The old village of Hollókő is a Palóc settlement in Nógrád County in northern Hungary and a deliberately preserved, living example of rural life before the 20th-century agricultural revolution. In Csesztve, the permanent exhibition at the Madách Imre Memorial House focuses on the history of the Madách family and on “Az ember tragédiája”. In Horpács, the permanent literary history exhibition at the Mikszáth Kálmán Memorial Museum is titled “MIKSZÁTH”.

The permanent and temporary exhibitions of the Pásztó Museum are housed in a Baroque Cistercian monastery building rebuilt in 1717–1718. Outdoors, the museum presents a medieval glassworks and blacksmith’s workshop as an industrial heritage monument unique in Hungary. For geological themes, visit the Boszorkány-kő educational trail in the Karancs-Medves Landscape Protection Area: it illustrates basalt volcanism from 2.4 to 5.2 million years ago.
