Hollókő brings together a living historic village with castle and nature attractions. Hollókő Ófalu is an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement and has lasting significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its traditional Palóc architectural forms and historic layout as a single-street village have been preserved. At the same time, Hollókő is still inhabited today and is not an open-air museum. Those interested in the village’s appearance can therefore explore both individual architectural features and its traditional settlement structure.

Ófalu, Museums and Everyday Palóc Life

Since 1964, the Falumúzeum has shown the way of life of a typical Palóc farming family. Its exhibits cover their home, furniture, traditional clothing and agricultural tools. This brings attention not only to the village houses but also to everyday life and work. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

The Postamúzeum offers a different perspective. Its permanent exhibition, “A palócföld postája,” is spread across two rooms and covers the development of the postal network in the Palóc region, along with related postal memorabilia. Visitors can try pottery or weaving in some of Ófalu’s craft workshops; what is available may vary.

Hollókő Castle and Its Exhibitions

The medieval castle ruins stand on the hill above the village and are part of the World Heritage Site. The castle’s interactive exhibition tells its history and legends. Visitors can see a knights’ hall, historic living quarters and a chapel. This means the settlement history of Ófalu and the castle complement each other as distinct places to explore history and storytelling traditions, while offering different kinds of visits.

If you have questions about guided tours, you can ask the castle staff. The Hollókői-vár app serves as a digital guide. When planning your visit, it is helpful to think of these as different options: the exhibition and castle interior on the one hand, and information about guided tours or a digital guide on the other.

Landscape Protection Area and Trails

The Hollókői Tájvédelmi Körzet lies entirely within the administrative area of Hollókő. The whole landscape protection area is freely accessible, and several hiking trails run through it. The 4.5-kilometre Hollókői biológiai tanösvény loops around Vár-hegy and the hagyásfás pasture of Túlsó-mező. Along the way, it introduces habitats typical of the Cserhát. The trail’s length and nature theme give it a different focus from the village and castle exhibitions.

The Kertek-alja tanösvény runs through the valley of the Hollókői-patak, along the ends of the gardens that descend into the valley. This trail is another local way to experience Hollókő through its landscape. Its description differs from that of the biological nature trail: here, the route through the stream valley and along the gardens is the focus, while the other trail highlights the aforementioned habitats of the Cserhát.

A Historic Look at Village Agriculture

The village’s history of agricultural use is also part of its character. Hemp fields once lay beside the stream at the western end of Hollókő Ófalu. The village families grew the amount of hemp they needed on narrow plots. This historic land use can be considered as a distinct aspect of the village’s history, separate from today’s museum and hiking options.

When looking for a hotel in Hollókő, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus primarily on Ófalu and its exhibitions, the castle or the trails in the landscape protection area. This lets you start planning with the things that interest you locally.
