Accommodation in Pusztazámor
Location and traces of history
Pusztazámor combines a distinctive setting with architectural evidence from different centuries. The village lies at the foot of Zámor Hill, on both sides of the Zámori Stream, between the hills of Etyek and the Érd Plateau. Its historic landmarks range from reused remains of a 13th-century Romanesque church to a votive cross from 1926. Barcza Castle is not within the village boundaries, but about half a kilometre outside them. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering the sights in the village and the nearby area separately.
The Zámorhegyi hermitage brings together several construction phases
The Zámorhegyi hermitage is located in the cemetery of Pusztazámor. Mihály Mentler, chief magistrate of Nagyszombat, had the chapel built in 1758; after Ottoman rule, he had resettled the village. Remains of a horseshoe-shaped Romanesque church from the 13th century were used in the construction. The church was 11 m long and 6.5 m wide. These measurements show the elongated plan of the former church, whose remains were incorporated into the later chapel. Together with the bell house and monks’ cells built beside it, the hermitage forms an architectural ensemble and is considered a distinctive Baroque monument complex. It thus brings together a Baroque ensemble and the remains of an older Romanesque church.
Bell tower and votive cross
The communal bell tower of Pusztazámor was erected in 1930 to mark the 900th anniversary of the death of Saint Prince Imre. The votive cross Barcza Imre réti fogadalmi kereszt was erected in 1926 by landowner Imre Barcza, in memory of the birth of his son and the full recovery of his wife, Henriette Széchenyi. The two monuments differ in both their purpose and their date: the bell tower commemorates a saintly prince, while the cross recalls events in one family. Together with the hermitage, they offer different points of reference in time and personal history, from medieval architectural remains to 20th-century memorials.
Barcza Castle in the surrounding area
Barcza Castle stands on the right bank of the Zámori Stream, in a three-hectare, arboretum-like old park. It lies about half a kilometre outside the village boundaries of Pusztazámor; the castle and park are therefore in the nearby area, not within the village. There is a small pond at the end of the park’s main clearing. On a small peninsula opposite it stands a garden pavilion with a classical appearance. The terrace, which opens onto the garden, offers a view of the pond. The three hectares indicate the scale of the park, while the pond, peninsula and pavilion provide smaller spatial features. If you plan to include the castle in your itinerary, check access before visiting; ownership and access may change.
A sacred work of art
A white marble statue of Christ, made in Venice in the last century, is located in the auxiliary chapel in Pusztazámor.
