Discover Szentendre: Folk Culture, Ceramics and the Danube
Accommodation in Szentendre
You can focus your trip to Szentendre on a range of themes: Hungarian folk culture in authentically furnished historic buildings, ceramic works by Margit Kovács, or two crosses with their own histories. There are also sweeping views of the Danube and Szentendre Island, as well as downloadable maps of the town centre and its attractions. The choice of themes therefore ranges from museums and commemorative heritage to practical orientation in the town.
Folk Culture in Historic Buildings
The Skanzen presents Hungarian folk culture in authentically furnished buildings that are 100 to 200 years old. Its natural surroundings provide the setting, while the displays connect the theme with the buildings themselves. This distinguishes the Skanzen from the Kovács Margit Ceramics Museum, which focuses on the life’s work of a single artist. Individual buildings may temporarily close. If you want to see a particular building, check its accessibility before your visit.
Margit Kovács and the Ceramics Museum
The Kovács Margit Ceramics Museum in Szentendre opened in 1973 and presents the life’s work of Kossuth Prize-winning ceramic artist Margit Kovács (1902–1977). The collection includes more than 300 figurative works and covers the artist’s entire career. The year 1973 marks the museum’s opening; 1902–1977 are Kovács’s years of life. On the second floor of the new wing, the museum also displays a reconstruction of Margit Kovács’s house on Pozsonyi Road, including her potter’s wheel. The figurative works and the reconstruction, featuring a specific piece of equipment, thus offer distinct ways to explore her work.
Two Crosses, Two Historical Connections
The Tanners’ Cross is a wrought-iron cross on a simple stone base, erected in the 18th century by tanners from Bosnia. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Danube, the opposite Szentendre Island, the houses in the centre and the Preobrazienska Church at the foot of the hill. The Vine-growers’ Cross is Szentendre’s oldest memorial cross and was intended to protect the vineyards from storms. The two crosses have different historical connections: the Tanners’ Cross is notable for its builders and the view, while the Vine-growers’ Cross is associated with the intended protection of the vineyards.
Maps and Cycling Route
For orientation, the Szentendre tourism portal offers maps to download and print. They show the town centre and Szentendre’s attractions. You can use the maps digitally or print them out to help you find your way. The international EuroVelo 6 cycling route runs along Ady Endre út in the Szentendre section. If you include EuroVelo 6 in your travel plans, the street marks a specific section of the route in Szentendre. Markings and traffic arrangements may change; check both before setting out.
