Museums, Gallery and Architectural Heritage

The main building of the Rippl-Rónai Vármegyei Hatókörű Városi Múzeum on Fő utca houses nine permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions. The number of permanent exhibitions may change if the museum is reorganised. The museum preserves and presents the historical, scientific, cultural and artistic heritage of Kaposvár and Somogy County. Its subject matter therefore extends beyond individual works of art, encompassing various aspects of regional history and culture.

The Vaszary Képtár is dedicated to contemporary visual art. Its nearly 500 m² modern, climate-controlled exhibition space presents regional and national themed exhibitions, as well as group and retrospective exhibitions. The gallery is the most significant venue for contemporary visual art in Kaposvár and the region. The museum and gallery thus offer different perspectives: one focuses on a broad historical and cultural heritage, the other on changing visual art exhibitions.

The architecture of the Csiky Gergely Színház on Rákóczi tér is also part of the city’s cultural attractions: the listed building was constructed in the Art Nouveau style. The theatre opened on 2 September 1911 with the operetta “Cigánybáró” by Johann Strauss II. Hungarian and world literature classics, as well as contemporary works, are performed every year; there are also several premieres. Bathing Facilities at the Virágfürdő

The Virágfürdő includes an indoor leisure pool, an outdoor beach bath, a thermal bath, a swimming pool and a wellness area. For different swimming levels—from swimming lessons to professional sports—there is a teaching pool, a 25-metre pool, a 50-metre competition pool and a seasonal 50-metre outdoor pool. Pool availability may vary, so check what is currently open before planning a visit, especially for the seasonal outdoor pool.

The indoor leisure pool features a 28–31 °C adventure pool with a current channel, neck showers, underwater bubble plates, side massage and jets. There is also a 36–38 °C bubble pool. These facilities offer families a way to relax even in poor weather. The bathing areas differ in both use and focus: the pools range from swimming and training to warm-water experiences.

Lake Deseda and Zselic

Lake Deseda and its surroundings north of Kaposvár form a locally protected natural area with diverse flora and fauna. A cycling path approximately 14.5 km long runs around the lake; in 2022, it received the title “Cycling Path of the Year.” If you plan to ride the route, take the current route conditions into account as you prepare.

The Fekete harkály tanösvény is located in the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet, where guided tours are offered. Tour arrangements may change, so check the latest information if you are interested. The exhibition “Békalencse, vízipásztor, fakopács – a Deseda élővilága” about the flora and fauna of Lake Deseda is on display at the Fekete-István Visitor Centre. Exhibition content may change, so it is worth checking in advance if you wish to visit this particular exhibition.
