Nature destinations around Kaszó offer a range of different highlights: Baláta-tó is known for its marshland and rare plants, while nearby trails provide access to marshland, forest and the forest canopy. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Kaszó, these specific differences may be relevant to your planning. The following sections put the nature topics and their scale into context.

Baláta-tó: Marshland and Rare Plants

The Baláta-tó Nature Reserve, just under 220 hectares in size and protected since 1942, is located near Kaszó. It is the oldest nature reserve in Somogy County. Its botanical features include the rare carnivorous Aldrovanda vesiculosa, which grows in floating mats, as well as heart-leaved water clover, bog strawberry, peat mosses, marsh gentian and the Carpathian crocus.

Trails for Marshland and Forest

The approximately 600-metre-long Dr. Marián Miklós sétány runs along a boardwalk above the marsh meadow. It offers views of the marshland without disturbing the natural features presented. One hour is allocated for independent exploration. This makes it possible to plan the marshland visit as a separate one-hour activity.

The Öregerdő Tanösvény, just under 1.5 kilometres long, was renovated in 2025. Its eight stations and 15 information panels provide insights into the components, interactions and diversity of the forest community, the forest layers, and common plants and animals in the forestry area. The topics thus range from relationships within the forest community and forest structure to common species.

The Lombkorona Tanösvény runs at the level of the lower canopy layer, 9.5 metres above the ground. The approximately 124-metre-long trail introduces typical forest plants and animals. Of the three trails described, it is the shortest; the marshland trail is approximately 600 metres long, and the Öregerdő Tanösvény is just under 1.5 kilometres long. When comparing the two forest trails, the Öregerdő introduces forest relationships and structure, while the shorter canopy trail presents typical species at the level of the lower canopy layer.

Railway and Guided Activity

The Kaszói Állami Erdei Vasút runs as a round trip between Kaszó and the Baláta stop. If you plan to take the railway, check the timetable before travelling. This lets you include the connection in your plans without assuming a specific departure time.

The Kaszói Vadaspark introduces visitors to native big game species across 2.5 hectares. The animals are presented as part of an activity led by the operator. This makes it different from the trails: here, the focus is on the animals and the guided presentation.

Wider Destination: Balaton South

In the wider destination of Balaton South, the Zselici Tájvédelmi Körzet was awarded International Dark Sky Park status in 2009 because of its low light pollution. The Zselici Csillagpark was established in the heart of this protected area. Somogy County also includes, among other places, Kis-Balaton, Barcsi Ősborókás and Babócsai Basakert.
