Ságvár Among Hills and History
Accommodation in Ságvár
The landscapes of Mezőföld and Somogyi-halomvidék meet in Ságvár. The character of the village is reflected in its hilly terrain as well as in individual historic sites. This gives you two distinct themes to consider when choosing where to go: panoramic views and nature on the one hand, and the history of churches, Romans, and pilgrims on the other.
Hills, Vineyards, and Views of Lake Balaton
The first hills of Somogyi-halomvidék surround Ságvár in a semicircle. Their slopes are home to vineyards, orchards, wine cellars, and weekend houses. From these hills, panoramic views open up across Lake Balaton, its northern shore, Ságvár, and the surrounding countryside. The view therefore takes in both the lake and its northern shore, as well as the village and its surroundings. The slopes, with their vineyards and orchards, show a different side of the landscape from the shady woods around Ságvár, which are suitable for excursions.
Bujó-lik and Böre-vár
Bujó-lik, also called Lyukas-domb, is a tunnel on Lándor-hegy. As of 2013, it was 21.6 metres long, about 2 metres wide, and an average of 1.75 metres high. Its length and height gradually decrease over time, so these measurements refer specifically to the situation in 2013. Bujó-lik can be reached from the village centre after about 1.5 kilometres along the yellow trail. Check the trail markings locally before setting out.
The hill fort of Böre-vár lies within the boundaries of Ságvár, 5 kilometres southwest of the village on the southern side of the Jaba Valley. It measures 150 × 57 metres. Its location is clearly distinct from the directions to Bujó-lik: for the tunnel, the starting point is given as the village centre, with an approximate distance along the yellow trail, while Böre-vár is located southwest of the village.
Church and Roman History
Ságvár’s present-day Reformed church was built from 1811 to 1814 under the direction of Csicsvai Vasas András. The Reformed congregation financed the construction with money from a share of the harvest. Nearby, Tricciana Park commemorates the Roman fortification; archaeological research and excavations bring this historical period to life. The church and park thus point to different historical periods: the Reformed church building of the early 19th century and the Roman fortification.
The Képes-fa and Its Pilgrimage History
The Képes-fa is an oak tree on the road to Jaba puszta, believed to be more than 300 years old. It served as a resting place for pilgrims travelling on foot to the pilgrimage site in Andocs. Its name comes from an image of Saint Vendel that pilgrims from Székesfehérvár placed on the tree in 1930. The tree’s story thus connects its former role as a resting place with the origin of its name.
Challenge Tours and Excursions
Ságvárért Egyesület developed the Löszölő-Tökölő challenge tours in response to the natural surroundings. The route leads to notable and remarkable spots in Ságvár and the surrounding area. This tour concept therefore focuses not on a single building or natural attraction, but on a sequence of different places in the region.
The Megalöszölő/Löszölő/Tökölő challenge tour had been held every year in July since 2007. The exact dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around this tour, check the dates in advance rather than assuming a specific current date based on its past July tradition.
