Visitors who choose Bonnya as a destination encounter a place whose character is especially evident in its traditional houses, church and small religious structures. The Koppány stream flows through Bonnya; at the same time, the village is part of the Völgy kör sequence of settlements in Koppányvölgy Nature Park. These local and wider connections give you different points of reference for planning your stay and looking for a hotel.

Village History and Buildings

Numerous traditional long houses with verandas have been restored. Many retain their original floor plans and form; some feature historic plaster decorations on their street-facing façades. The verandas and house forms, as well as the façades with their varied designs, shape Bonnya’s architectural character.

The village’s history is also part of its character: around the turn of the 20th century, Bonnya was a distinctly Swabian village with more than a thousand inhabitants. Bonnya’s only church is a white Evangelical Reformed church that stands above the village and was built in 1883. Its date of construction and appearance provide a specific point of reference for local architectural history.

A chapel for Roman Catholic worshippers was established in a former school building. A small bell tower stands in front of the towerless chapel; the Vida Cross is located at one corner of the building. The base of the white stone cross depicts three female figures. Bonnya is also home to a wooden altar whose street-facing side is decorated with elaborate carvings. Two female figures stand at its base. Together, these buildings and details show different forms of religious design.

The Stream and Route Connections

The Koppány stream flows through Bonnya. The Völgy kör route in Koppányvölgy Nature Park also passes through a series of settlements: Törökkoppány, Somogydöröcske, Somogyacsa, Bonnya, Kisbárapáti, Fiad, Szorosad and Kára. If you include this route in your plans, check the local trail conditions before setting out.

On the way from the centre of Bonnya, the Bödő–Takács Cross, erected in 1909, is about half a kilometre beyond the wooden altar. This sequence along the route connects several of the religious buildings mentioned above with another historic cross; the distance refers to the section beyond the altar.
