Csaroda brings together medieval religious architecture and a distinctive surrounding wetland landscape. The Reformed church was built in the late 13th century. Parts of the building feature frescoes depicting apostles, dating from the late 14th century. The construction and decoration therefore belong to different periods: the church is the older feature, while the frescoes are from a later period. If you choose historical sites based on their specific features, Csaroda offers these two distinct periods in a single building.

Church and Landscape in Csaroda

The dates help distinguish the building’s history from its decoration. The depictions of the apostles are not said to cover the entire church; they are found in parts of the building. Those interested in medieval churches can therefore consider both the building’s date, in the late 13th century, and its imagery, from the late 14th century. This combination makes the site particularly interesting when choosing a trip focused on a specific historic building.

The landscape also shapes the character of the destination. The SzatmĂĄr-Bereg Landscape Protection Area extends into the outlying area of Csaroda. Nearby, BĂĄb tava lies in the area enclosed by Csaroda, GelĂ©nes and DarĂłc, at the northern end of Kisasszony-erdƑ. NyĂres-tĂł and BĂĄb tava near Csaroda are distinctive peat bogs; their formation dates back to the Ice Age. The church and the bogs thus represent different timescales: the history of a building on the one hand, and the landscape’s long-term development on the other.

The Báthori Castle in Nyírbátor features a permanent exhibition and a panorama display depicting members of the Báthori family in period surroundings. Another architectural example is Andrássy Castle in Tiszadob: it was built between 1880 and 1885 in the French Gothic style by former Prime Minister Gyula Andrássy, to designs by Ignác Alpár.

The landscape examples in Szabolcs-SzatmĂĄr-Bereg also vary in scale and character. The approximately 53-hectare BĂĄtorliget Primeval Swamp is strictly protected and preserves the stages in the vegetation and landscape history of the Alföld plain particularly completely. Near Tiszadob, a 1,000-hectare nature reserve encompasses oxbow lakes, riparian forests and grassland. Between 80 and 90 pairs of herons nest in a large colony in Tölgyes Forest. These regional examples offer further guidance if you would like to consider other protected landscapes in the region in addition to Csaroda’s wetlands.
