Komoró is a Hungarian municipality in the Záhony District of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, located in the northeastern Nyírség region. Two local themes help orient visitors: the history and architecture of the churches, and the Komorói Holtág as a fishing destination. If you are looking for a hotel in Komoró, consider which of these interests you would like to focus on during your stay.

Getting your bearings in Komoró

Komoró is 49 kilometres northeast of Nyíregyháza, the county seat, and 12 kilometres southwest of Záhony, the district seat. Main Road 4 and local road 4152 run through the municipality. Komoró is also connected to the railway line running from Záhony to Budapest's Nyugati railway station. These distances give you a sense of the municipality’s location relative to the two administrative centres; the roads and railway are further reference points for planning your journey. You can consider the municipality’s location and its different transport links separately as you plan your stay.

Church history and architecture

A church dedicated to Saint Michael existed in Komoró by 1336 at the latest. The Reformed church is first mentioned in 1744; the stone church was built between 1784 and 1809. Its architecture is characterised by the Classical style: the building has a single nave and a polygonal termination. At the same time, the structure also reflects older forms. The ground plan preserves the Gothic division into nave and sanctuary. The Reformed church’s present appearance gives little indication of its medieval origins.

During the 1996 renovation, the presence of medieval bricks in the sanctuary and on the north wall of the nave was confirmed. In front of the church stands a 24-metre-high Romantic-style tower with a pyramidal roof. Together, these features offer several architectural points of interest: the single-nave building’s Classical character, its older ground-plan divisions and traces of medieval brickwork. For those interested in cultural history, Komoró offers more than a single building period: several historical layers can be seen in different parts of the buildings.

Holtág and fishing waters

The Komorói nyugati holtág is a fishing water managed by the Sporthorgász Egyesületek Sz.-Sz.-B. Megyei Szövetsége. Its banks vary in character, and its water levels also fluctuate; local conditions may change seasonally. A tourist description of the Komorói Holtág, last updated in 2016, highlights large wels catfish. It also mentions zander, nase and chub; burbot and sterlet are said to be relatively common there. These fish details reflect the water’s character as described, but do not guarantee current fish stocks. Check the current local regulations and conditions before fishing.

Komoró brings together two different interests: exploring church history and architectural styles, and visiting a backwater associated with fishing. The details about the banks and fluctuating water levels add to the picture of the Holtág, while the historical and architectural details bring the churches into focus. Which of these aspects matters to you can guide your travel plans and your search for a suitable hotel in Komoró.
