Németkér brings together Swabian history, memorial sites and landscape features. The village lies along Road 6231, which connects Paks and Cece. Local highlights include Swabian traditions that have been preserved to this day, woodland areas and protected habitats. You can explore Németkér through its cultural history, natural areas, or both.

History, memorial sites and architecture

From 1785, German settlers, mostly from Hesse, came to Németkér. The village’s Swabian traditions have been preserved to this day. This history is reflected in various ways: in memorial sites, local customs and food culture. It stretches from settlement in the late 18th century to the continued preservation of Swabian traditions.

The Staub Ferenc Memorial House was established in 2006 in the former home of Staub Ferenc, a painter from Németkér. It presents a permanent exhibition of the painter’s works. A Swabian room has been furnished in the part of the house facing the street; objects from a local history collection are displayed in the courtyard. The different areas give the house both an artistic and a local cultural-historical dimension.

Another historic building is the Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which dates from 1816. Wooden Stations of the Cross stand on Kálvária Hill. The church and stations represent different forms of religious expression in the village landscape.

Woodland and protected landscapes

There are several thousand hectares of woodland around Németkér. The forests consist mainly of acacia and coniferous trees; remnants of old oak forests have also been preserved. The woods around the village offer opportunities for excursions. The different types of woodland and the surviving oak-forest remnants create a varied picture of the landscape.

Látóhegy is a distinct nature conservation area. It has been protected since 1987 and is part of the Dél-Mezőföld Landscape Protection Area. Látóhegy includes protected sandy habitats and wet meadows; the area provides refuge for rare and valuable plant and animal species. Plants found there include marsh orchids, sand irises and sand feather grass, as well as homoki varjúháj. These habitats and species make Látóhegy a distinct nature destination alongside the woodland around Németkér.

Swabian food culture and events

Local dishes are also part of the village’s Swabian heritage. Kéri stangli is a local Swabian dish from Németkér. Kerva Knedl is a local yeast dumpling from Swabian food culture. The surviving remains of the cellar village of Neuriss are considered part of Swabian cultural heritage. Neuriss is also connected with the history of viticulture and wine culture in Németkér.

Customs and events include the Németkéri napok, a long-standing series of events in the village. Its programme may vary from year to year. The Búcsúfa ceremony in September is based on an old Swabian tradition; it, too, may vary from year to year. If you would like to include one of the events in your plans, check the dates for your travel year.
