Protected natural areas lie within the administrative boundaries of Öcsény; the town’s history also includes architectural and village history, as well as a chapter in Hungarian aviation history. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can include the Gemenc protected areas and the Fekete gólya tanösvény in your travel plans, along with the Reformed Church, the Őcsényi Tájház and the local history of ballooning.

Protected Nature and Gemenc

Protected nature reserves of national importance lie within the administrative boundaries of Öcsény as part of the Duna-Dráva National Park. The landscape also includes oxbow lakes belonging to Öcsény. Some were cut off during the regulation of the Danube, while others formed naturally earlier; they are part of the Gemenc Landscape Protection Area.

Gemenc Natura 2000 sites also lie within the area of Öcsény: the special protection area HUDD10003 and the site of community importance HUDD20032.

Farmhouse, Folk Costume and Church History

The Reformed Church of Öcsény is protected as a national monument. The present-day late Baroque church was built in 1782–1783 on the site of an earlier building.

The Őcsényi Tájház presents the way of life, domestic culture and agricultural equipment of Öcsény’s farmers, who became prosperous after the regulation of the Danube. Ethnographic and agricultural collections add to this presentation. The municipality describes the local folk costume as unique internationally and highlights other local traditions.

Aviation History and Nature Trail

Öcsény is also connected with the history of hot-air ballooning. The first modern Hungarian hot-air balloon, HA-001 Pannónia, made its maiden ascent in Öcsény on 3 November 1977. On 29 September 2019, the “Első Magyar Hőlégballon-történeti Gyűjtemény” and its first exhibition opened at Öcsény airfield. The balloon’s first ascent on 3 November 1977 took place before the collection and its first exhibition opened on 29 September 2019.

Another natural attraction can be explored along the Fekete gólya tanösvény in Öcsény. The trail starts at the Keselyűsi Fogadóépület. Information boards explain the management of floodplain forests and game populations, as well as the black stork, Gemenc’s well-known bird. If you plan to visit the trail, check its condition after flooding: conditions may change afterwards.
