Landscape and Nature

The landscape around Szaknyér alternates between hilly and flat areas. Forests dominate the higher ground; the protected cyclamen grows in parts of the forests. The areas involved differ in scope: the national park encompasses the entire administrative area, while the cyclamen grows in parts of the forests.

In a meadow beside the cemetery, you can watch wild animals from hunting stands. This specific wildlife-watching opportunity complements the broader landscape setting with a particular location. There is also a spring at the entrance from the direction of Hegyhátszentjakab, built by soldiers at the end of the Second World War. It can serve as a rest stop for thirsty hikers. These two natural features serve different purposes: the meadow is primarily for wildlife watching, while the spring offers hikers a place to rest.

History and Local Landmarks

Szaknyér was first mentioned in writing in 1428 under the name Zathmer. The Maria Theresa Lime Tree was planted to commemorate the coronation of Maria Theresa; its trunk circumference is 3.6 metres. It can still be seen in the eastern part of Szaknyér. The town’s history is evident here in two forms: an early written mention and a commemorative landmark embodied by a tree that can still be seen today.

The bell tower in Szaknyér is considered a landmark. Approximately in the middle of the village, an old bell stand and a fire engine stand beside the municipal office. Some buildings still have traditional Pitvaros or Kódis-állás features. If you are interested in architectural styles as well as dates, these features offer another way to explore local history. The lime tree is in the east, while the bell stand and fire engine are approximately in the middle: the local landmarks are therefore found in different parts of the village.
