Velemér – Fresco Art and the Sárgaliliom Nature Trail
Accommodation in Velemér
Velemér brings together the medieval frescoes of Fények temploma and the Sárgaliliom Nature Trail. The church is a cultural and historical highlight; the trail points to a protected rare plant of Inner Őrség. For planning purposes, it is also important to note that the trail ends at Fazekas ház in Magyarszombatfa, outside Velemér.
Church and frescoes
Fények temploma has a single-nave interior, a tower, and a polygonal apse. Inside are fresco fragments of exceptional value. In 1378, Aquila János painted the interior with scenes from the Bible and legends of the saints. Its architectural features thus meet a religious visual world encompassing biblical stories and saints’ legends. The date 1378 places the paintings in the 14th century and draws attention to the history of this church interior.
Plan your visit
Fények temploma is listed as open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; Monday is a day off. Check these hours before your arrival.
Sárgaliliom Nature Trail
The Sárgaliliom Nature Trail takes its name from a protected rare plant of Inner Őrség, whose largest population is in Velemér. The name thus links the place to a specific natural history theme. The trail ends at Fazekas ház in Magyarszombatfa. When choosing your destinations, it is worth considering this endpoint separately: the plant explains the name, while Magyarszombatfa marks the actual destination. The Sárgaliliom Nature Trail and Fények temploma therefore offer different areas of interest: natural history and church art.
Regional themes in Vas County
The wider travel destination of Vas County offers further landscape and cultural themes. Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County and includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. Őrség National Park was established on March 1, 2002, to preserve and present the natural, ethnographic, and cultural-historical values of Őrség. These protected areas give the regional perspective on Vas County a broader landscape and cultural dimension.
Vasi Skanzen showcases the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County from the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. By comparison, the frescoes in Velemér focus on biblical scenes and legends of the saints, while the open-air museum presents rural architecture and ways of life in a broader regional context.
The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút in Vas County also leads to five thermal bath complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other thermal baths. The Vulkán-Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy, and Belső-hegy. The regional routes focus on different themes: thermal baths and cycling on the one hand, and three named hills on the other.
