Churches and historic furnishings
The Evangelical church preserves interior furnishings dating from 1903. These include a combined pulpit and altar with Hungarian motifs, a copper crucifix, candlesticks and an ornate Bible. The gallery stands on iron columns; the pews, organ and altarpiece are also part of the furnishings. These details offer several points of interest if you are interested in historic church interiors and their design.
The Roman Catholic Jézus-Szíve Church dates back to the 15th century and was remodeled in the Neo-Gothic style around the turn of the 20th century. Inside, a wooden gallery on cast-iron columns is on one side, and a pulpit connected to the altar is on the other. The main altarpiece depicts Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. Kemenesmagasi thus brings together different historical periods: the Evangelical church’s preserved furnishings from 1903 and the Catholic church’s medieval origins and later Neo-Gothic remodeling.
A marble plaque in the nave of the Evangelical church commemorates 41 Evangelical soldiers who fell in the First World War. This memorial adds another perspective to the history of the furnishings: the act of remembrance within the church interior.
The Berzsenyi Crypt and historical connections
The Berzsenyi Crypt in Kemenesmagasi’s public cemetery has protected status MK 2007/173. The Berzsenyi family crypt in the cemetery on the outskirts of town was built by Dr. Berzsenyi Dezső from 1906 onward. After its completion, the Honvéd Colonel Berzsenyi Lénárd, from 1848, was interred there posthumously.
Berzsenyi Lénárd is also associated with a historical portrait project: while imprisoned in the fortress of Olmütz, he made portraits of 132 fellow prisoners in total, as well as one of himself. The Berzsenyi story therefore encompasses not only the crypt, but also a specific body of work from his time in prison and the place where it was created.
Another cultural connection is the Kemenesmagasi Citerazenekar és Népdalkör Hagyományőrző Egyesület, an association from Kemenesmagasi. It received the Aranypáva Grand Prize at a KÓTA qualification event. This award adds a connection to a local association to the themes of churches and family history.
