When choosing a destination, Köcsk can be understood above all through its local history. The village consists of Nagyköcsk and Kisköcsk; the Csikászó stream flows between them towards Kodó. Local points of interest range from two school chapels and the history of a former church dedicated to Saint George to the Nagyköcsk war memorial. If you are looking for a hotel in Köcsk, the district names and the different historical periods can help you appreciate what makes the village distinctive.

Districts and religious history

The Kisköcsk School Chapel is on Hunyadi utca, while the Nagyköcsk School Chapel is at 35 Kossuth Lajos utca. Their names and street addresses distinguish the two chapels.

An older historical layer is represented by the former church dedicated to Saint George. It stood in the eastern part of Nagyköcsk, near the present-day cemetery; its foundations were found in the Köcsk cemetery. The church is first mentioned in written records in 1289. It was probably built by the Köcski family. It was destroyed during the Ottoman period. The written record and the discovery of the foundations are distinct points of reference in the history of this church site.

Architecture and remembrance

Another historical landmark in Köcsk is the Ajkay–Hetthéssy Manor House. It was probably built by Ajkay Dénes in the 1880s in the Historicist (eclectic) style. Compared with the first written mention of the Church of Saint George, its construction dates to a much later period in the village’s history.

The Nagyköcski hősi emlékmű lists the names of nine soldiers who died in the First World War. A plaque added later also names six victims of the Second World War and fascism. A relief depicts a honvéd symbol. The memorial was created by Ráday Ignác, a stonemason from Celldömölk. The separate groups of names make the expansion of remembrance over time visible.

Köcsk in the wider Eisenburg destination

The wider Eisenburg destination also offers regional nature, cycling and bathing attractions. The Írottkő Nature Park is in the northwestern part of Vas County; it includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút (Thermal Cycling Tour Route) leads to five spa complexes in Vas County and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas. Bük and Sárvár are also part of this regional picture: they are home to two internationally recognised thermal baths, 25 kilometres apart. These attractions describe Eisenburg at a regional level; Köcsk can be understood through its own local and historical connections. In the wider Eisenburg destination, the Vasi Skanzen presents the rural way of life and vernacular architecture of Vas County from the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements.
