Táplánszentkereszt lies along the Gyöngyös stream and parallel to Road 87. The stream and road give you two clear reference points for finding your way around the town. Local themes include local history, churches and castles, the collections at Erdődy-kastély, and wild garlic in the protected Széchen Park. This offers the option of focusing on cultural history or on local nature during your stay. There is one specific condition to note when visiting the castle: visits to Erdődy-kastély are possible by prior appointment.

Culture and Architectural History

The cultural center of Táplánszentkereszt has been located in the heart of the town since 1961, next to Szécseny kastély and surrounded by Szécseny Park. This location brings together the cultural center, the castle next door, and the park setting in the townscape. In Szentkereszt stands the church dedicated to the Holy Cross. It was probably built in the first quarter of the 13th century, partly using material from the Roman era.

The protected castles in Táplánszentkereszt include Széchény–Inkey–Sigray-Saint-Marsan Castle in Szentkereszt, Erdődy-kastély in Bakófa, and the former Inkey–Széchényi Castle and its garden in Szentlőrinc. Erdődy-kastély in Táplánszentkereszt houses a local history exhibition, a Forrai Katalin memorial room with an exhibition on the history of kindergartens, and the mineral and rock collection of János Pásti. Visits are possible by prior appointment. Arrange your visit in advance.

Vas County as a Regional Setting

The Írottkő Nature Park is located in the northwestern part of Vas County, the wider travel destination. The park includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. In Táplánszentkereszt, Széchen Park is a locally protected natural area; the nature park and landscape protection area, by contrast, offer a regional perspective on the landscape. In the wider travel destination of Vas County, the Termál Kerékpáros Túraút (Thermal Cycling Route) leads to five spa complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions.

The cultural history can also be explored more broadly in the wider travel destination of Vas County. Since opening in 1973, the Vasi Skanzen has rescued and rebuilt a total of 43 buildings from 27 settlements. It showcases the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County from the past two centuries. This extends the thematic perspective from local and church history in Táplánszentkereszt to the county’s rural architectural heritage.
