Vasszécseny brings together cultural and historical sights, a mineral museum and striking buildings.

Minerals and fossils at the Ásványmúzeum

Across 120 square metres and four rooms, the Ásványmúzeum displays minerals, rocks and fossils from historical Hungary, whose territory extended beyond the borders of present-day Hungary, as well as from neighbouring countries. You can also learn about geological eras and crystals there. The museum also features the painting Teremtérmítosz by the painter Vincze László.

Other exhibits include the coats of arms of the mining towns of historical Hungary, wooden statues of Saint Kinga, Saint Barbara and Saint Anna displayed together, and a carved Bányamanó figure. It is associated with mining legends from Besztercebánya and Selmecbánya. The museum has no regular opening hours: visits are possible by prior contact and appointment. Arrange your visit with the museum in advance.

Church art and architectural history

Between 1835 and 1837, Ebergényi Benedek had the Nagyboldogasszony Church completely rebuilt in the neoclassical style. At that time, it was given the title Nagyboldogasszony, which it still bears today. In the central section of the main arch of the nave, you can see a painted version of Gyula Benczúr’s allegorical drawing depicting the lands of the Hungarian Crown. It was created by the Vasszécseny painter József Dragovics.

Right next to the church is the Keresztényi Közösségi Ház és szoborpark, which includes a rectory and a sculpture park. In the village of Lipárt stands the Keresztelő Szent János Church, the oldest listed building in the municipality of Vasszécseny. The churches thus offer different historical points of reference: the neoclassical renovation of the Nagyboldogasszony Church and the municipality’s oldest listed building.

Castle park and Magtár

A well-kept, 14-hectare park surrounds Új-Ebergényi-kastély. The coat of arms of the Ebergényi-Viczay family can be seen in the gable field of the façade’s gable. The building known today as Magtár is also worth a look for its architectural history: it was built as a Festetics sörház, or brewery. Hofstadter Kristóf may have designed the building; he worked as an estate architect for Festetics Kristóf in Keszthely. This attribution is therefore a possibility, not a confirmed authorship.

Eisenburg as the wider region

The Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County, within the wider travel destination of Eisenburg. It includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. Vasi Skanzen also offers a distinctive cultural and historical perspective on the county: it presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. Another historical sight in the wider travel destination of Eisenburg is the Romanesque church of the Benedictine Abbey of Ják, consecrated in 1256.
