Nature and geology in Felsőörs

Malom-völgy is a locally protected natural area within the administrative boundaries of Felsőörs. Along a stream bed, there are numerous tufa dams, small waterfalls and distinctive rock formations such as Miske-szikla. Malom-völgy also has a nature trail with themed information boards about springs, geological features, birdlife and important tree species.

Forrás-hegy is in Felsőörs, on the slope of the Balaton Uplands. Its surroundings are popular with hikers, nature enthusiasts and researchers. The Forrás-hegy Geological Nature Trail is located in the northwestern part of the settlement and showcases the geological, paleontological and stratigraphic features of a former quarry. Paleontology studies fossil evidence, while stratigraphy studies the sequence of rock layers. The two nature trails therefore differ in focus: Forrás-hegy centers on the quarry and the history of the Earth; Malom-völgy combines geological topics with springs, birdlife and tree species.

Local history and the organ

A local history exhibition is on display in the rooms of the old smoke kitchen at Civilház. Visits are possible during opening hours by prior appointment. Plan your visit in advance, making an appointment and going during opening hours. The focus on local history offers a different perspective from the geological nature trails: here, the history of the settlement takes center stage.

The historic organ of the Bűnbánó Magdolna prépostsági templom in Felsőörs is rare and has been preserved in its original condition. Its keyboard is located at the rear of the case and is not aligned perpendicular to the façade. This arrangement is a distinctive feature of the instrument, in addition to its historical preservation. A restoration in 2022 is also part of its history. The keyboard’s position and the restoration shed light on different aspects of this cultural heritage.

More geological attractions in the wider destination of North Balaton

In the wider destination of North Balaton, Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers boat trips and the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometers so far. Another geological point of interest in this wider area is Hegyestű, a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. Hegyestű exposes the interior of a basalt volcano that was active about 8 million years ago. From the viewpoint at the western edge of the quarry grounds, you can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board.
