Szentkirályszabadja combines a distinctive literary history with summer tourism and short breaks for cyclists. The poet Miklós Radnóti’s name is closely linked to the town: from here, as a forced labor prisoner, he set out on his final march on foot, and here he wrote his last surviving poem. These two historical connections give the choice of destination a clear cultural character. When choosing a hotel for a trip, visitors can therefore take into account not only the general atmosphere of the season, but also the town’s history.

Radnóti memorial and Tájház

A house where Radnóti spent a few days was first turned into the “Radnóti Emlékház” through a community effort and later into a Tájház. Both served as memorials to the poet. This sequence connects Radnóti’s stay with the community’s efforts to create a memorial later on. The Tájház is also one of Szentkirályszabadja’s finest architectural monuments.

Local character and travel planning

The Szent István király-kút is also among the town’s finest architectural monuments. Its proximity to Lake Balaton and the city of Veszprém contributes to significant summer tourism in Szentkirályszabadja. Many cyclists arrive in town via a cycle path and take a short break here. This offers different perspectives for planning a trip: literary history and architectural monuments, the summery atmosphere, or a break during a cycling tour.

Lake Balaton - North as a regional setting

Within the broader travel destination of Lake Balaton - North, the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang is a distinctive attraction. The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town, which has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometers. Boat trips are offered in the cave, as well as the guided “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”) exhibition. Together, the cave system, boat trips and exhibition bring geological and experiential themes into focus there.

Hegyestű, a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló, is also within the broader travel destination of Lake Balaton - North. The inner side of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago has been exposed there. At the western edge of the quarry grounds, visitors can use a panoramic board at the lookout point to identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also has a rock garden featuring characteristic rock types of Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary. The perspectives therefore differ: the 14.6 kilometers describe the explored extent beneath the town; at Hegyestű, the exposed inner side of the volcano, the lookout point and the panoramic board draw attention to the rocks and surrounding hills.

The Pannon Csillagda in Bakonybél, also within the broader travel destination of Lake Balaton - North, offers an interactive exhibition on space travel and astronomy. These regional themes offer a different focus from the Radnóti story and Szentkirályszabadja’s architectural monuments.
