Sümeg brings together medieval buildings, religious art and different ways to explore history. Sümegi Vár stands atop a peak that rises high above the surrounding area; churches, a tower from the former town fortifications and a birthplace add to this focus. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between the history of buildings and fortifications, sacred furnishings, and historical performances and exhibitions.

Castle, military history and historical performances

Sümegi Vár is a comparatively well-preserved medieval fortress. It was built on a mountaintop that rises high above the surrounding area. At the Történelmi Élménypark near the castle, medieval siege engines are displayed, of the kind used to attack castles before the 15th century. The castle and exhibition offer two different perspectives on military history: the fortress itself and the technology of attack.

The Sümegi Történelmi Lovasjátékok offer a different focus. They include mounted and on-foot combat performances, archery, and the throwing of throwing stars, battle-axes and spears. These staged combat performances sit alongside the siege engines on display. The Történelmi Élménypark also has a play-castle combination, climbing walls, an ox cart for role-playing and a rider seesaw for children. These play features complement the historical theme with movement and imaginative play.

Tarisznyavár is also part of the history of the town fortifications. It was not a standalone fortress, but part of a tower protecting a town gate and the former fortifications. Tarisznyavár can therefore be understood as part of a larger defensive complex, not as a separate castle.

Churches, art and architecture

The Urunk Mennybemenetele Plébánia Templom was built in 1756 on the site of St Catherine's Church, which had stood there until the 18th century. Its walls are decorated with frescoes by Franz Anton Maulbertsch. The construction date, predecessor building and artistic decoration offer different historical points of reference: the site of the older church and the frescoes in the later building.

The Ferences Kegytemplom and monastery were founded by György Széchényi, Bishop of Veszprém, between 1648 and 1658. Together with the Plébánia Templom, built in 1756, they offer a chronological comparison between two church-related building projects: one date refers to a foundation, the other to the construction of a church.

The birthplace of Kisfaludy Sándor is a single-storey, L-shaped building resembling a manor house. Its described architectural form adds another facet to Sümeg's architecture alongside the churches and castle.

The exhibition rooms of the Püspöki Palota are currently closed to visitors due to extensive renovation work. If you are planning a visit, check the latest status again before you travel.

More to explore in the wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton

The wider destination of Northern Lake Balaton offers other places of interest with their own distinct themes alongside Sümeg's historical focus. Boat trips are available at Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, along with the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt.” The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town that has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres. Hegyestű lies between Zánka and Monoszló and is 337 metres high. Its inner face reveals the structure of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago. At the western edge of the quarry site, visitors can use a panoramic board at a lookout point to identify the surrounding hills. Hegyestű also features a rock garden with characteristic rock types of Transdanubia.
