Gyulakeszi combines mill history with horse-riding options for different experience levels. At Csigó Malom, you can learn about both the history of the site and an antiques collection. Gyula Vezér Lovasbirodalma offers a different focus: riding options ranging from lunge lessons for beginners to trail rides for advanced and experienced riders.

The History of Csigó Malom

The main building of Csigó Malom was built in 1867 by Csigó István for his son, Csigó Pál. The history of the mill site goes back further: from the 13th century, there was first a watermill there, followed later by a steam mill. After nationalization, it was converted into a feed-mixing plant; operations ended in 2002.

The dates refer to different phases: the main building was completed in 1867, while a mill had already existed at the site centuries earlier. The later uses also differed significantly—from watermill and steam mill to feed-mixing plant. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s history from the changing uses of the site.

At Csigó Malom, you can also visit an antiques collection featuring furniture, paintings, carpets, and porcelain. It broadens the perspective on the building by presenting a selection of different objects. Check the current visitor arrangements before your trip.

Horse-Riding Options by Experience Level

Gyula Vezér Lovasbirodalma offers lunge lessons for beginners. There are also riding options for advanced and experienced riders, including trail rides. The activities therefore cater to different needs: lunge lessons for beginners sit alongside options for more experienced riders. If you are planning this as part of your stay, check current availability before your trip.

In the Wider Balaton - North Destination

The wider Balaton - North destination also offers distinct themes to help with trip planning. The following examples range from cave and volcanic landscapes to porcelain culture, complementing Gyulakeszi’s local attractions with other interests.

Cave and Volcanic Landscape

Boat rides are offered in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang, which also features the guided exhibition “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a cave system beneath the town, of which 14.6 kilometers have been explored so far. The boat ride, exhibition, and information about the larger cave system offer different ways to discover karst.

Hegyestű is a 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. The inner face of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago is exposed there. At the western edge of the quarry area, visitors can use a panoramic board at a viewpoint to identify the surrounding hills. A rock garden featuring characteristic rock types from Transdanubia adds to the geological experience.

The volcanic mountain Badacsony offers hiking trails and panoramic views for hikers; its distinctive geological formations are called basalt organ pipes. Winemaking is also associated with the mountain: special grapes are grown on its slopes and used to make Badacsony wine. The landscape, geology, and winegrowing are thus presented as separate themes.

Porcelain Culture in Herend

In Herend, the porcelain factory’s visitor center provides information about porcelain production, the techniques involved, and the traditions of applied arts. The Herend Porcelain Museum features a permanent exhibition and changing exhibitions on the factory’s history. In the workshops at the Mini-Manufactory, visitors can handle porcelain paste and a brush for painting. Exhibitions, production, and hands-on activities offer different ways to explore the craft of porcelain making.

If you would like to explore additional themes, the wider Balaton - North destination offers further highlights such as karst, volcanic landscapes, and porcelain culture.
