Szigliget combines a volcanic landscape with a rich architectural and cultural history. This offers a range of starting points for planning your trip: the village setting between hills and lake, historic buildings, an exhibition, a nature trail and a wine tasting by prior arrangement. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of these aspects of the village you would particularly like to focus on during your stay.

Landscape and castle

Szigliget and Szigliget Castle were built on volcanic hills. Lake Balaton is an important part of the panorama. The landscape therefore brings together volcanic features and lake views alongside historic architecture. Szigliget Castle is a 750-year-old fortress. Free information sheets are available in 18 languages. If you would like to use them for guidance, check their current availability before your visit.

Historic buildings and local history

ÓvĂĄr, the Old Castle, is associated with the foundation walls of an ancient fortification beneath the hill “The Queen’s Skirt” (KirĂĄlynĂ© szoknyĂĄja). The Avasi Church is considered possibly the oldest surviving building in Szigliget. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1846 and dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

More than 50 registered historic buildings are protected in Szigliget’s historic preservation area. The wine cellars and press houses are also part of the village’s architectural heritage; numerous protected and locally significant cellars survive on the former vineyard slopes. These protected buildings and cellars broaden the view beyond individual historic structures to include different parts of the village’s built heritage.

Since 1952, Esterházy Castle in Szigliget has operated as a Literary Creative House. This cultural role is also part of the village’s history, alongside its historic buildings.

Exhibition, nature trail and wine tasting

The “Weapons Through the Ages” exhibition is located in the gallery building on Kisfaludy Street in Szigliget’s Old Village. It displays weapons from prehistoric times to the present day and illustrates the development of warfare and the military traditions of past centuries. As operations and displays may change, check the latest information before visiting.

Marked in blue with a “T,” the Kamon-kƑ nature trail starts at the church in Szigliget and leads back there. The church is therefore both the starting point and the return point of the circular route.

Szigliget Village Beach is designated as a paid beach; early-morning swimming is available there between 05:00 and 07:00. If you plan to visit the beach, check before your visit whether the admission rules and time slot are still in effect.

SzĂĄszi Birtok offers guided wine tastings by prior arrangement. The family history, philosophy and wines are presented during the tasting. It includes six wines, a light snack and a cellar visit, and is available for groups of six or more. Book in advance and confirm the arrangements before you arrive.
