Bakonybél: Nature, History and Trails
Bakonybél offers several distinct themes: nature and forestry collections, monastery and architectural history, and marked hiking trails. This makes it easy to plan your trip by separating cultural experiences from time outdoors.
Collections on the Nature of the Bakony
The Bakonyi Erdők Háza is located in the center of Bakonybél. Housed in a former granary, it contains nature and forestry collections. A diorama depicts the wild animals of the Bakony, while paintings by naïve artist Dani Pál show the former landscape of the Bakony Forest. The wildlife and landscape offer two different perspectives on the region’s nature.
Another exhibition, Trophy and Rock Exhibition, features more than a hundred trophies and furs, as well as a rock exhibition. It brings together themes from wildlife and geology. Along with the collections at the Bakonyi Erdők Háza, it offers a varied picture of the ways nature is represented in Bakonybél.
Monastery and Traditional Architecture
The Benedictine monastery in Bakonybél includes a Baroque church, a monastery building dating to 1754, and an arboretum. The present-day church of Szent Mauríciusz Monostor was consecrated in 1754. The history of the monastery in the wider destination of North Balaton dates back to its founding in the area of present-day Bakonybél: King Stephen I founded it in 1018 at the urging of the monk Günther.
The Bakonybéli Tájház also brings regional architectural history to life. It is located in a group of buildings dating from the mid-19th century, considered an example of the Bakony’s folk architecture. The Hasprai family built the two residential houses and the so-called torkospajta. Several types of buildings and their shared historical setting are the focus here.
An exhibition at the Tájház explores the origins and history of the Bakony Indian Game, an Indian-themed game more than 50 years old that is associated with Cseh Tamás. This distinct cultural and commemorative focus complements the themes of architecture and monastery history.
Hiking in and Around Bakonybél
Several marked hiking trails pass through Bakonybél. Route information may change, so check it before planning your trip. One specific option nearby is the Boroszlán Nature Trail, whose starting point is three kilometers from Bakonybél. The loop is seven kilometers long, with a shorter two-kilometer option also available. If you plan to hike either route, check the latest information with the park administration before setting out.
About one kilometer from Bakonybél, the Szent-kút Chapel, also known as Borostyán-kút, stands at a popular excursion spot. The present-day chapel dates from the late 19th century. The site has a 14-station Stations of the Cross and a Calvary with figures of Christ, Mary and John. Its short distance and named stations give this destination its own religious and historical significance.
More Places to Explore in North Balaton
The wider destination of North Balaton offers other distinct nature and cultural experiences. In Tapolca, boat rides are available in the Tapolcai-tavasbarlang; there is also a guided exhibition, “Csodálatos karszt” (“Wonderful Karst”). The cave is part of a system beneath the town that has been explored to a length of 14.6 kilometers so far.
Another landscape highlight is Hegyestű, the 337-meter-high mountain between Zánka and Monoszló. There, the inner face of a basalt volcano that was active about eight million years ago reveals the geological history of the site. At the western edge of the quarry, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board. A rock garden displays characteristic rock types of Transdanubia. These attractions broaden the picture of North Balaton, while Bakonybél offers its own destination profile with collections, historic buildings and hiking trails.
