If you are looking for a hotel in Csesznek, you can plan your trip around the area’s attractions: the castle and local history, the Kőmosó-szurdok Gorge with its Via Ferrata, or viewpoints and marked trails. This can help you decide whether history, rocky landscapes, climbing routes or views should be the focus of your stay.

Csesznek Castle and history

Csesznek Castle is first mentioned in writing in the 13th century. The Garai family remodeled it in the Gothic style, making it an important knight’s castle. Its historical significance and Gothic design offer different points of interest for visitors. The castle still offers guided tours. Check the availability of castle tours before your trip.

Kőmosó-szurdok Gorge and Via Ferrata

At the foot of the castle lies the Kőmosó-szurdok Gorge, a relatively small yet impressive and interesting ravine. Large rock ledges and small waterfalls characterize the gorge; a small pond forms in a rock basin. Conditions may vary after rain. The rock ledges, water and basin give this place a different character from the historic castle.

The Csesznek Via Ferrata was built in 2013 in the gorge below the castle as Hungary’s first via ferrata route. There are five routes on Dachstein limestone rock walls, with difficulty grades ranging from B to F. The grades make it possible to compare the routes as options with different ratings. Equipment rental, instruction and guided programs are available for the Via Ferrata. Operating details may change; check the availability of these services before your visit.

Views and marked trails

The summit of Tarack-hegy can be reached on foot from the southeastern part of the parking lot on the edge of Csesznek. From there, a panoramic view opens up over Csesznek, the castle and the surrounding area. You can reach Zörög-tető from Csesznek via the green-marked trail. At the end of Vasút utca, it passes through a tunnel beneath Route 82. These are different kinds of directions: for Tarack-hegy, the reference point is the parking lot; for Zörög-tető, it is the trail marking and the tunnel.

Cemetery and other activities

In southeastern Csesznek, at the eastern foot of the castle and next to the Kőmosó-szurdok Gorge, lies the Jewish cemetery “Zsidó temető a múltból.” It has not been used for about a century and has a history spanning more than 100 years. Its location connects the historic site with the gorge, while its history offers a distinct focus.

At its covered indoor venues, Lovagvölgy offers workshops and activities in the Apród houses, the village houses and the “füvesház.” There is also a VR experience, an escape room and a folk games house. The options range from workshops and activities to digital and play-based experiences. Individual programs may change.
