Sármellék: Cycling Routes, Kis-Balaton and Village History
Accommodation in Sármellék
Sármellék lies west of Lake Balaton on the Kis-Balaton plain. An eastern spur of the Zala Hills lies in the northern part of the village. The landscape around the village can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: the Kis-Balaton plain and the foothills extending from the hills to the north. This provides an initial framework for choosing a hotel in Sármellék; local points of interest range from cycling routes to village history and architecture.
At the Két Tölgy Information Centre
The Két Tölgy Information Centre site includes a themed playground with free admission and a rest park featuring illustrations by Zsuzsanna Füzessy. The centre’s ground floor houses a tourist information office. The building is the former Sármellék railway station, which had been unused for a long time and was renovated as part of the project to establish the information centre. Tourist information, a place to relax and the building’s former use as a railway station thus come together in one location.
Cyclists may also be interested in the facilities and routes at the centre: there is a cyclists’ rest stop and a lockable bicycle storage room. The site is also connected to cycling and hiking routes linking the Kis-Balaton with Lake Balaton.
Tüskevár and Local Culture
Tüskevár is the oldest part of Sármellék and is associated with the novel by Hungarian writer István Fekete. The former railway station building also has a connection to film history: it and its surroundings are associated with the Hungarian film Tüskevár. The name thus appears in several local contexts—as the name of the oldest part of the village, in connection with István Fekete, and as a reference to the film at the railway station.
Church and Historic Buildings
The listed Church of St John the Baptist was built between 1839 and 1842 in the Neoclassical style. A Baroque Holy Trinity monument stands in front of the church. Its pedestal depicts Saint Sebastian, Saint Wendelin and Saint Florian. The church and monument thus offer two distinct architectural points of interest: the church is Neoclassical, while the monument in front of it is Baroque. Sármellék Cemetery is also home to the so-called Bogyai Chapel, with a new funeral hall built onto it.
Sármellék in the Wider Zala Destination
Within the wider Zala destination, the Kis-Balaton is the largest body of water. The strictly protected area covers 14,745 hectares and is the setting for István Fekete’s classic novels Tüskevár and Téli berek.
Another regional point of interest is the Zalai Borvidék wine region. It developed in Zala on the slopes and plateaus of the Zalai-dombság hills and on the northwestern slopes of the Keszthelyi-hegység mountains. The wine region comprises two wine-growing districts and 38 settlements. This also offers a way to view a stay in the context of Zala as a destination in its own right; Sármellék itself has specific local highlights, including the Két Tölgy Information Centre, cycling and hiking routes, and its buildings and local points of interest.
