Keszthely: Castle, Park and Lake Balaton
Accommodation in Keszthely
For your trip to Keszthely, you can choose among culture, green spaces and activities on the water as different focal points. Festetics Palace combines several exhibitions with a long family history; historic buildings, parks and activities on the water provide further highlights. This lets you tailor your time in Keszthely to the themes that matter to you.
Festetics Palace and its exhibitions
Festetics Palace was built and expanded continuously from the mid-18th century and remained the property of the Festetics family for 200 years. An exhibition spanning more than 20 rooms focuses on the family’s former aristocratic life. The hunting exhibition offers a different focus: it displays trophies from wild species hunted on five continents, with many animals shown in depictions of their natural habitats.
The Historical Model Railway Exhibition offers a technical perspective. Its model railway layout covers more than 2.7 kilometres of track and features more than 600 buildings across 503 square metres. Interactive elements let visitors activate hidden scenes; a special camera-equipped locomotive offers a view from a train driver’s perspective. Festetics Palace Park also has a palm house. The exhibitions therefore cover very different subjects: aristocratic life, hunting and a detailed railway world.
Green spaces and paths to the shores of Lake Balaton
Festetics Palace Park is a protected natural area. Helikon Park covers 17 hectares and is the largest green space in the city. Its main path leads straight to the shores of Lake Balaton. The park is also home to the domed Helikon Memorial, built in 1921 to mark the centenary of the Helikon Festivals and now a landmark of Keszthely. Here, a path to the shore meets a notable historic landmark.
The cityscape also provides a cultural setting for your stay. A series of listed Baroque and historicist buildings lines the pedestrian zone. Szigetfürdő regained its 19th-century appearance in several phases of construction during the second half of the 2000s; inside, it meets modern standards. Another special place is the Biblical Garden beside the synagogue at Goldmark House. It contains 60 plants mentioned in the Bible.
Museums, garden and experience farm
At the Balatoni MĂşzeum, interactive elements complement the exhibits: across more than 700 square metres, the museum presents around 10,000 objects, as well as interactive games and other surprises. The experience farm at the Georgikon MajortörtĂ©neti KiállĂtĂłhely offers a range of activities, including a petting zoo, play barn, plant exhibition, playground and baking area. The different offerings can help you weigh up cultural and activity options for your trip.
The Georgikon Botanikus Kert is a 13-hectare botanical garden with exceptional biodiversity and is locally protected. One of its special features is a fig-germplasm conservation collection from the Balaton Uplands, described as unique in the region. Keszthely also has an important place in the history of education: the Georgikon was Europe’s first agricultural college.
Boat trips and sailing
Excursion boats, including the Helka, depart from Keszthely’s distinctive pier for shorter round trips. If a boat trip is an essential part of your plans, check the timetable in advance. Keszthely also offers sailing, sailing lessons and boat rentals, including options for complete beginners. Round trips, lessons and rentals provide different ways to spend time on the water; check current operating details in advance.
