Petrikeresztúr: Church, Ceramics and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Petrikeresztúr
If you are considering Petrikeresztúr as a travel destination, you can get a sense of the village through its church history, a ceramic artwork, a small-leaved lime and various hiking connections. The specific dates, measurements and route lengths offer different starting points for planning your stay.
Church and Building History
The Roman Catholic church in Petrikeresztúr was built in the Gothic style in the 15th century. A church already stood on the site of the Szent Kereszt Felmagasztalása-templom in 1275, but it later burned down. The Roman Catholic church had already been restored in the Baroque style by 1735. This places three milestones side by side: the early church site, the Gothic building and the later Baroque restoration.
The church building stands alone and faces east. It has a single nave, a polygonal chancel and a buttressed tower in front of the west façade. These terms describe different features: “single-nave” refers to the main interior space, while “polygonal” describes the chancel’s multi-sided end. This distinguishes the floor plan and orientation from the building’s exterior structure.
Márkos Attila created the Stations of the Cross in the Szent Kereszt Felmagasztalása-templom from clay in 1973 in memory of his brother, Márkos Béla. The stations mark a distinct point in the church’s history: they were created centuries after the Gothic building and Baroque restoration. They also connect the church with a personal dedication.
Small-Leaved Lime in the Churchyard
A small-leaved lime stands in the churchyard. A hiking report from 2022 gives its trunk circumference as 460 cm and estimates its age at around 350 years. Its age should therefore be understood as an approximation. The lime adds a natural point of interest to the building’s history, with its own estimated time span.
Hiking Routes and Distances
A local report from 2020 describes the Kéktúra hiking trail as passing through Petrikeresztúr. A report from the same year also mentions a 2.5 km educational trail that runs through the village and has ten information boards. The Pataktól patakig educational trail starts in Petrikeresztúr (as of 2020).
The section designated RP-DDK-36 between Becsvölgye and Petrikeresztúr is listed as 4.1 km long. The distances can therefore be compared: 2.5 km for the described educational trail and 4.1 km for this route section. Check current trail conditions before setting out on RP-DDK-36.
Ceramic Art and Lessons
At the time of a report published in 2020, ceramic artist Págyi Zsóka lived in the village district of Győrfiszeg and offered lessons for interested participants at the Tuttu Mikka-Makka Association’s ceramics studio. Ceramics thus appears in two different contexts: as an artwork in the church and as a lesson offering at that time. If you would like to include lessons in your plans, check in advance whether courses are currently taking place and how participation is arranged.
