Platania: Nature, Churches and Festivals
Accommodation in Platania
When planning a trip to Platania, it is easy to distinguish between nature, church architecture, and religious feast days. Monte Reventino represents the landscape; the churches offer insights into architectural history and religious traditions. The Museo di Micologia e Scienze Naturali adds a natural history focus. These details can help you weigh your interests and festival dates when planning your stay.
Monte Reventino and Nature
Monte Reventino is the western continuation of the Sila Piccola. River gorges and waterfalls shape the mountain, where there are forests of deciduous and coniferous trees. Cascata della Tiglia offers flowing water, a river breeze, green mosses, and smooth, polished rock. This presents both a broad landscape context and a specific waterfall as different ways to experience nature.
Monte Reventino is not accessible by public transport; you can reach it by car via the SP 159/1. It is about 20 minutes or 8 km from the center of Platania. Check road conditions before setting out if you plan to visit the mountain.
Churches and Religious History
The religious history includes the parish of San Michele Arcangelo, founded in 1706 by Bishop Monsignor Nicola Cyrillo. Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo has three naves and a Latin-cross floor plan. Frescoes on the dome of the central nave and on the small dome of the right side aisle date from the first two decades of the 19th century. The floor plan and frescoes offer two different perspectives on the building: its spatial layout and a later art-historical layer.
Chiesa dell'Immacolata is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The rural Chiesa Madonna del Riposo is located in the Petrania vecchia–Cuvoli area. It was restored in the 1980s and is thought to be the first place of worship in the municipality of Platania. This church brings together a specific location and a cautiously worded historical interpretation.
Natural History and Collections
The Museo di Micologia e Scienze Naturali has a different focus from the churches. Its collection includes hundreds of mushroom specimens faithfully reproduced by skilled artisans, as well as exhibits on mineralogy, botany, and herbalism. The museum is divided into the departments of mycology, botany, mineralogy, and zoology. The collection also includes stuffed specimens of local and regional wildlife. The mushroom exhibits combine natural history topics with artisanal reproduction; the departments also extend beyond mycology into other areas of natural science.
September Feast Days
The Festa Patronale San Michele Arcangelo is celebrated every year on September 29 and combines religious observances with civic festivities. After the afternoon procession, the festival continues with stalls, music, and celebrations in the streets of Platania. The traditional liturgical celebration of Madonna del Riposo takes place every year on September 8. During its procession, old religious songs are sung in the local dialect.
The two dates differ both in timing and in what takes place: Madonna del Riposo comes before the patron saint festival and is associated with a procession and songs in the local dialect; the patron saint festival also includes stalls, music, and street celebrations. If you are traveling specifically for one of the celebrations, check the upcoming program or local details in advance.
