San Floro brings together Calabrian silk culture, historic buildings and views over the Corace Valley. The town lies on Calabria’s Via della Seta. Its microclimate favors the cultivation of mulberry trees, which forms the basis for producing Catanzaro silk. This gives your trip a clear focus: the connection between the landscape, silk processing and local history.

Silk between the museum and rows of mulberry trees

The Museo della Seta is located in Castello Caracciolo. Practical demonstrations show silk reeling—that is, extracting the thread from the cocoon—and weaving on old handlooms. Reeling produces the thread from the cocoon; weaving on the handloom carries the process forward to create fabric. This way, you can learn about two consecutive stages of the work.

During the Nido-di-Seta experience, you can walk between rows of mulberry trees, learn about silkworm rearing and try drawing the silk thread from a cocoon yourself. The activities have different focuses: at the museum, you can watch demonstrations of reeling and weaving; at Nido-di-Seta, you can also walk between the rows and try the process yourself.

Views and architectural history

Castello Caracciolo stands in a strategic position in San Floro, overlooking the Corace Valley and offering a privileged view of the Gulf of Squillace. Piazza Guglielmo Marconi is San Floro’s main square and also a panoramic terrace above the Corace Valley. The two places offer different viewpoints: from the castle, you can look out over the valley and gulf, while the piazza opens up a view across the valley.

The Chiesa di San Nicola Vescovo was first built in 1560. Its Neoclassical façade and redesigned Renaissance floor plan describe different architectural aspects: the design of the façade and the layout of the floor plan. The church is accessible to people with disabilities.

San Floro is also known for white figs, which are naturally dried in the sun using a traditional method. This tradition adds another connection to local production alongside the silk culture. At Pizzeria Mulinum, agricultural pizzas are made with pure wholemeal flour and high-quality produce from its own garden. If you would like to eat there, check whether the pizzeria is open before your trip.
