Prosecco-Contovello brings together themes you can weigh differently when planning your trip: trails through the Trieste Karst, historic sites, and a long wine tradition. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay here, first consider what you’d like to do. The routes offer varied impressions, while castle ruins, a small lake, and the terraced landscape reveal other sides of the area.

Karst Trails and Views

Nature Trail No. 9 passes vineyards, rural steps, old wells, and the agricultural terraces of the Pastini. Along the way, it offers views of the Gulf of Trieste and leads as far as Miramare railway station. The trail also descends from the foot of the karst slope toward Castello di Miramare. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Strada Napoleonica is another trail in the Trieste Karst. It offers views of the Gulf of Trieste, can be cycled, and is suitable for families with children. The routes’ different features can help you choose between them: Nature Trail No. 9 is described in terms of vineyards, terraces, and the route toward Miramare; the Strada Napoleonica is also an option for a bike ride. Here too, check trail conditions in advance.

The so-called fishermen’s trails connect Moncolano and Contovello with the coast. They run between dry-stone walls and the terraced Pastini. This takes you through a landscape where paths, walls, and agricultural terraces belong together. If you plan to explore these trails, check their current condition beforehand.

Lake and Landscape

Laghetto di Contovello lies near the Sentiero Natura and a viewpoint overlooking the landscape below. The lake is about 40 meters wide and 30 meters long, with a maximum depth of 2 meters. It is fed by a small spring and rainwater. Check the condition of the site before visiting.

In the past, Laghetto was a valuable water supply on a plateau without surface rivers. This former role gives the small body of water a place in the area’s landscape history. It differs from its present significance as a notable spot near the nature trail and viewpoint.

The Parco della Trincea del Litorale can also be understood through its views: Monte Gurca, also known as Monte di Contovello or Kontovelski hrib, is the park’s highest point and makes a good viewpoint. The visit to the park begins a few steps from the parking lot at the Santuario di Monte Grisa. Check parking arrangements in advance.

Castles and Historic Trails

Only a few ruins remain near Contovello of the castle known as Castello di Prosecco and also as Castello di Moncholano. It was built at the beginning of the 14th century to protect important transport routes and agricultural production areas. Castello di Moncolano is recorded as a military castle dating from the 14th to the 16th century.

The historical identification of Castello di Prosecco with ancient Pucinum is linked to the name Prosecco. This is a historical interpretation. Those interested in local history will therefore find that the castle is connected not only to medieval fortifications but also to an older history of the name.

Another historical focus is the Parco del Campo di Addestramento Militare di Prosecco. This discovery trail lies in Bosco Fornace in Prosecco and is dedicated to the Austro-Hungarian 97th I. R. regiments and their role in the First World War. Together with the castle ruins and fishermen’s trails, it offers a range of ways to explore the area’s history.

Prosekar and the Terraces

Prosekar is an old wine tradition. The vineyards extend across the terraces near Contovello and Prosecco. This means the wine is not only of culinary interest but also part of the cultural landscape you can experience on trails through the Pastini. When planning your trip, you can easily distinguish this focus from excursions to viewpoints and historic sites: you can follow the vineyards and their tradition, or focus on the trails and traces of local history.
