San Daniele Del Friuli
Accommodation in San Daniele Del Friuli
San Daniele Del Friuli can be explored through several clearly identifiable themes: the production of Prosciutto di San Daniele, closely tied to the town; the Museo del Territorio; historic churches; and routes through the surrounding countryside. The places and details below offer specific points of interest.
Prosciutto di San Daniele and its production
The production of Prosciutto di San Daniele is closely tied to the town: all processing takes place exclusively in the municipality of San Daniele del Friuli and in accordance with the rules of the DOP production code. The prosciutto is also aged in San Daniele del Friuli, for at least 400 days. A unique microclimate plays a decisive role. The minimum aging period makes this a distinct step in local production, while the microclimate makes the place itself part of the production process.
Visits and tastings at Alberti 1906 “La casa del prosciutto” are available by prior reservation. If you plan to include a visit in your trip, check availability for your preferred date in advance.
Museum, library and sacred art
The Museo del Territorio is divided into three main sections: archaeology, sacred art and ethnography. The archaeological section traces local development from the period between the 11th and 8th centuries BC through to the Middle Ages. This broad span of archaeological history sits alongside two other areas of cultural history. The museum therefore offers a different thematic perspective from that of individual churches and their specific works of art.
The Biblioteca Guarneriana was founded in 1466. It is considered Friuli’s first public library and one of the oldest in Europe. The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate dates back to the 14th century and houses a Renaissance fresco cycle by Pellegrino da San Daniele, created between 1497 and 1522. On the facade of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Fratta is a bas-relief in the lunette, created by Giorgio da Corona in 1476. It depicts the Madonna and Child enthroned, with two kneeling angels. The subject and precise date give this work its own art-historical significance.
Portonat is also attributed to Andrea Palladio. The church of San Daniele in Castello has a history spanning more than a thousand years, houses valuable works of art and offers panoramic views across Friuli. Together with the frescoes in the Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate and the relief on the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Fratta, these offer different points of interest: a fresco cycle, a single facade relief, and a church with artworks and a view.
Routes through the countryside
The Circular Route of San Daniele del Friuli (R007) starts in San Daniele del Friuli, heads towards Comerzo and crosses the Tagliamento River. The Anello di San Daniele – Rio Repudio – Arcano Superiore circular route runs between San Daniele and Arcano Superiore, passing through hills and vineyards and along waterways. The routes are described by different features: for R007, the starting point, direction and river crossing are specified; for the Anello, the two reference points and the landscape along the way are given. You can use each route’s description to include it in your plans.
