Campodonico: Hiking through forests and wide-open views
Accommodation in Campodonico
Campodonico lies almost on the border between the Fabriano area and Umbria and is characterized by particularly green landscapes. Several CAI hiking routes differ in their destinations and scenery; two circular routes can also be compared by length, difficulty rating and elevation gain.
CAI routes and their stops
The CAI circular route IT 6.09 is 10.8 km long, rated E for difficulty, and has an elevation gain of 580 m. It connects Campodonico, Monte Pordinaldo, Casale Val di Mazzi and Trofigno. The starting point is the car park at Hotel Pineta in Campodonico. Casale Val di Mazzi is a small, unstaffed mountain refuge. If you plan to visit it, check access in advance.
The circular route IT 7.04 is 17.5 km long, has an elevation gain of 1,020 m, and is also rated E.
The CAI route IT 6.07 also starts at the car park at Hotel Pineta. It passes Abbazia di San Biagio in Caprile, an old Benedictine monastery, and leads to viewpoints overlooking the Campodonico valley. The Monastero S. Biagio in Caprile near Campodonico dates back to the 11th century.
The CAI route IT 6.08 offers a different kind of scenery: it follows a stream for part of the way and leads to the renovated Casolare di Trofigno.
The long-distance hiking route ILP 5.04 is laid out differently from the two circular routes: it runs from Castagna di Spindoli via S. Biagio in Caprile to Fabriano. It is 26.2 km long and rated E. In order of length, the routes are clearly ranked: 10.8 km for IT 6.09, 17.5 km for IT 7.04 and 26.2 km for ILP 5.04; all three routes are rated E.
Forests, mountains and views
The CAI route IT 6.09 passes through a mixed forest of coniferous and deciduous trees and reaches a clearing with views across the Campodonico valley. This route combines a forest section with an open view of the valley.
Monte Giuoco del Pallone owes its name to its distinctive shape, which resembles a football stadium. From there, the view stretches to the Gemmo area, San Vicino, Gola della Rossa, Strega, Catria, Cucco, the mountains of Gualdo Tadino, Pennino, Monte Primo and the Sibillini Mountains.
A cross stands at Sasso Barbano, a prominent viewpoint overlooking the valley and the surrounding mountains.
