Castelfidardo brings together the history of the accordion and the memory of the Risorgimento, as well as the Selva di Castelfidardo as a natural area. This gives you a way to plan your trip around your interests: Would you like to focus mainly on musical history, explore paths in the forest, or learn about the memorial sites commemorating the 1860 battle? These different points of interest can help you assess Castelfidardo as a destination before looking for hotels for your stay.

Accordion and Work

The Museo Internazionale della Fisarmonica opened on 9 May 1981. The Monumento alla Fisarmonica e al Lavoro complements this focus with a work by sculptor Franco Campanari: made of bronze for statues, it was unveiled on 13 October 2002 and is about seven metres high. The museum and monument emphasize different aspects. The museum is dedicated to the accordion; the monument brings together the fisarmonica and lavoro (work) in its very name. The contrast between a museum that opened in 1981 and a monument unveiled in 2002 shows two different ways the accordion is represented in Castelfidardo.

The Selva di Castelfidardo: Forest and Trails

The Selva di Castelfidardo covers 35 hectares and is a prehistoric forest with rich biodiversity and particular botanical value. It is also a regionally protected area for its flora and was certified as a Forest Bathing Center by AIMeF in July 2020. Its size, botanical value, protected status and certification describe different aspects of this natural area. The forest also has numerous distinctive, walkable trails. The Stradone di Mezzo extends the entire length of the Selva, making it a specifically named trail within the forest. This distinguishes the forest area as a whole from the length of this particular trail, without implying a walking time or level of difficulty.

The Risorgimento: Museum and Remembrance

The Museo del Risorgimento di Castelfidardo brings military and social history together. The museum opened in 1989 and is among Italy’s first examples of a museum spread across a local area and closely connected with the social and everyday life of the local community. Its exhibition rooms convey the history of the historic clash between the Sardinian-Piedmontese and papal armies, while also offering insight into the society of the Marche during the Risorgimento. The military conflict and the social context of the era are thus presented side by side.

Memorial sites focus on a different aspect. The Sacrario-Ossario commemorates those who fell in the Battle of Castelfidardo on 18 September 1860. The Monumento Nazionale delle Marche stands near the historic centre on Monte Cucco hill and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the same battle. The two memorial sites therefore refer to different aspects: the fallen on the one hand and the anniversary of the battle on the other.

Gardens and Viewpoint

Piazzale Don G. Minzoni, also known as Porta Marina, features gardens and a viewpoint. As a place of interest, it differs from both the museums’ exhibition rooms and the forest trails: here, the focus is on gardens and views. Alongside musical history, the Risorgimento and nature, a garden and viewpoint offer another way to experience Castelfidardo.
