Discover Fabriano
Accommodation in Fabriano
In 2013, Fabriano was designated a UNESCO Creative City; internationally, the city is recognized for its traditional arts and crafts. A defining focus is paper production, which is explored from various perspectives in the Museo della Carta e della Filigrana.
Paper tradition and craftsmanship
The Museo della Carta e della Filigrana is housed in the former Dominican monastery and conveys seven centuries of local paper-making tradition. Its sections cover the handcrafted production and use of paper, watermarks and the techniques for making them. They also address the historical development of paper, the development of this art in Fabriano, as well as processing and related technology.
In an educational workshop, visitors can make their own sheet of paper together with the Mastri Cartai. The online booking system lets you select the type of visit, the number of participants, the language of the tour and the visit date. If you would like to include the workshop in your plans, check its availability in advance.
The annual Fabriano Carta è Cultura festival also celebrates Fabriano’s centuries-old paper tradition. Dates and programme vary. Check the specific event dates if the festival is relevant to your travel plans.
Art and archaeological history
The Oratorio della Carità was begun in 1587 and was the seat of the Confraternita della Carità. It contains a cycle of fourteen fresco panels by Filippo Bellini of Urbino. The Pinacoteca Civica “Bruno Molajoli” was founded in 1862; its extensive art collection ranges from the 14th century to the present. The two art sites differ in their focus: the Oratorio della Carità contains a fresco cycle of fourteen panels, while the Pinacoteca Civica collection includes works from the 14th century to the present.
The Area Archeologica di Attidium offers a different historical perspective. Its use spans from the late Neolithic period to the Imperial era, though not continuously. Archaeological finds include a Picene settlement from the 5th century BC and Roman burial materials. This time span and the different groups of finds give the site a distinct focus alongside the art collections and the history of paper.
Landscape and trails
The Valleremita area, in the mountain basin of the upper Esino, is part of the Natura 2000 network. In Valleremita, an equipped nature trail with explanatory panels begins at the Borgo. There is also a short, scenic circular trail around Monte Fano in the area of the Eremo di San Silvestro.
The two trail options offer different experiences: in Valleremita, the focus is on the nature trail and explanatory panels, while at the Eremo di San Silvestro it is on the short circular route around Monte Fano, with views along the way. When planning your trip, this lets you choose between a trail with explanatory panels and a scenic circular route.
