Villa Romana combines a historical connection with a landscape in the hills of the Marche, several hiking trails and the restaurant’s cuisine. For travel planning, you can consider these themes separately: take a cultural and historical landmark as your point of reference, choose a hike based on its route and length, or make regional cuisine a focus in its own right. The routes differ in length, course and the orientation details provided for each. This makes it possible to distinguish the specific tours rather than treating them as interchangeable trails.

History and Landscape

Villa Romana was founded on 6 January 1925 in a hilly area shaped by the landscape of Ancona. In 2013, it was officially added to the Elenco dei Locali Storici delle Marche. This recognition confirms its cultural and historical value to the area. The founding date and subsequent listing refer to two distinct aspects: the origins of Villa Romana and its recognized historical significance. For travellers interested in the destination’s history as well as a hike, this provides a concrete point of reference.

The hill leading up to Villa Romana was once cultivated land and was later abandoned. Nature has gradually taken over, with plants typical of the woodlands in the hills of the Marche. The woodland near Villa Romana includes field maple, manna ash, downy oak, hop-hornbeam and southern ash. The transformation thus spans the land’s former use, its abandonment and the natural spread of these plants.

Hiking Trails of Varying Lengths

The CAI Ancona–Varano–Valle del Boranico–Varano hiking route is classified as T – tourist, is approximately 10 km long and takes about three and a half hours without breaks. It runs from the valley of the Miano stream up to Villa Romana. The time estimate excludes breaks, which you should allow for separately when planning your trip. Length and duration provide different points of reference: the distance indicates the extent of the route, while the time estimate gives an approximate duration without stops.

The Grande Traversata del Conero offers a longer route. On its way from Ancona to Sirolo, it runs from the Casa delle Culture via Villa Romana and Montacuto, and is 16 km long. Compared with the approximately 10 km CAI hike, this offers a greater stated distance. Its course also differs from the tour that climbs from the valley of the Miano stream to Villa Romana.

The first stage of the Cammino della Porta d’Oriente is also classified as T – tourist. It runs from Ancona to Poggio and is 18.36 km long. Along this stage, the route follows the old road from Pietralacroce to the hilltop of Villa Romana. It also includes sections between the districts of Montacuto and Varano. At approximately 10, 16 and 18.36 km, the three hiking routes can be distinguished by their length.

A shorter option is the 5 km “Direzione Parco” Eco Trail, which runs through a regional nature and protected area of Conero. A 2022 description says the trail follows a level route up to the height of the Villa Romana restaurant on Via del Castellano. The upper woodland section of the trail extends as far as Villa Romana. Check current trail conditions and markings before setting out, as these may change.

Cuisine of the Marche at Villa Romana

At the Villa Romana restaurant, family recipes and authentic cuisine of the Marche are combined with fresh, handmade pasta and locally sourced ingredients. This culinary focus offers a different way to experience the destination than choosing a hiking route or exploring its history: the emphasis here is on recipes, preparation and regional ingredients.

Planning a Trip to Villa Romana

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Villa Romana, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. If you are planning a hike, you can compare the specific distances and routes; history, landscape and restaurant cuisine provide further points of reference to help you choose.
