Monteprandone brings together the history associated with San Giacomo della Marca, a historic centre, viewpoints and routes for cycling and walking.

San Giacomo della Marca: History and Collections

On 22 August 1449, at the saint’s request, Pope Nicholas V approved the construction of the monastery and the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie e Santuario di San Giacomo della Marca by the Franciscans of Monteprandone. The Oratorio di San Giacomo della Marca was built in 1581 near the site traditionally regarded as the birthplace of the man who later became a saint. The two buildings represent different stages of this tradition.

The collections also have distinct focuses: the Museo dei Codici di San Giacomo della Marca preserves 61 volumes from the saint’s library. The Museo del Santuario di S. Giacomo della Marca preserves garments and cloaks worn by San Giacomo. Written records and personal belongings thus offer two different ways of exploring the saint’s history.

The annual Mostra Nazionale di Arte Presepiale is also part of local cultural life. It presents works created by teachers and students of the Accademia Italiana di Arte Presepiale. With its alleyways, squares and architectural landmarks, the historic centre preserves the municipality’s history stretching back thousands of years. In Centobuchi, Villa Nicolai is a building of particular cultural and architectural value.

Views and Landscape

Monteprandone stands on a hill about 280 metres high and offers views of the Adriatic Sea, the Sibillini Mountains and Gran Sasso. Belvedere Don Giuseppe Caselli is a viewpoint overlooking the Apennines of the Marche and Abruzzo. The viewpoints offer different perspectives: from the hill, the coast and prominent mountains; from the belvedere, the Apennines of two regions.

Cycling and Walking Routes: Different Highlights

If you are looking for a cycling route that is mainly flat and suitable for families, Pedalando tra flora e fauna offers these features. The route runs almost entirely along the Ciclovia del Tronto. Tra vigneti e antichi borghi has a different character: it starts in the fortified village of Monteprandone and runs mostly along country roads, passing vineyards and traditional farmhouses built in the rural architectural style of the Marche. You can compare the route descriptions based on whether you prefer a largely flat course or a route highlighting vineyards and farmhouses.

You can also add a culinary element to a walk. On Monteprandone’s walking routes, you can visit local food and wine businesses along the way and sample typical products such as cheese, wines and oils. This opportunity to sample regional produce complements the historical and scenic highlights with a direct connection to local products.
