If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay in Campobasso, choosing a focus for your trip can help: are you especially interested in museums, architectural history, or paths and gardens? The city offers a range of starting points – from Samnite archaeological finds to churches and art, as well as a panoramic path and a large garden area.

Museums and the Misteri

In the Museo dei Misteri, thirteen processional structures are on display in the “Ingegni” hall. The museum also has two exhibition rooms and a screening room. This means there are additional spaces for exhibitions and screenings alongside the structures. On the Sunday of Corpus Christi, the Misteri process through the streets of Campobasso: they are thirteen processional structures carried by people. The museum and the festival offer different perspectives on the subject – the exhibition shows the structures in a hall, while the procession makes its way through the city.

The Museo archeologico nazionale di Campobasso offers a different focus. It presents Samnite archaeological finds and materials such as amber, ceramics, bronze, ivory and marble, as well as funerary contexts. The museum is housed in Palazzo Mazzarotta, an 18th-century building in the historic centre. The Museo di Palazzo Pistilli, by contrast, focuses on art history: using works from a once-private collection, it presents six centuries of art history. The collection was opened to the public at the request of its owners.

Churches, theatre and city history

The Teatro Savoia was built between 1923 and 1925 and inaugurated in 1926. Frescoes by Arnaldo De Lisio, dating from 1925, adorn the entrance, the foyer and the barrel vault above the auditorium. The building’s history and its specific design offer two different starting points for exploring the theatre.

Campobasso’s churches also tell different chapters of the city’s history. In 1572, Sant’Antonio Abate was converted from an oratory outside the city walls into a church by the Congrega delle Maestranze. Inside, four Baroque altars frame notable 17th-century Neapolitan paintings. The Santuario di Santa Maria Del Monte was built in the late Middle Ages as a private chapel for the feudal lords of Campobasso.

The original building of the Church of the Santissima Trinità was constructed in the early years of the 16th century at the behest of Andrea De Capua. On 29 June 1927, the church was elevated to cathedral status after the Holy See transferred the diocese from Bojano to Campobasso. At Castello Monforte, the story leads to another landmark: after the 1456 Santa Barbara earthquake, Count Nicola II di Monforte had the castle rebuilt. It dominates Campobasso’s historic centre.

Panoramic path and garden area

For a stay focused on landscapes and paths, Parco della Via Matris offers a distinct option. The panoramic path leads from the foot of Sant’Antonio hill to its summit. The park is in the centre of Campobasso and is a Site of Community Importance. The route and its designated status describe two different aspects of the park: its course along the hillside and its status as a protected site.

Villa de Capoa offers a different kind of garden. The nearly 16,000-square-metre grounds include tree-lined avenues, hedges, small squares and winding paths, as well as statues and fountains. Unlike the panoramic path, which runs from the foot of the hill to its summit, the focus here is on the design of a garden area. These differences can help you narrow down the focus of your stay before looking for a hotel in Campobasso.
