Montagano brings together an early documentary mention, churches, a local festival tradition, and named trails through the surrounding area. If you are looking for a destination with historical points of interest and different ways to explore the landscape and local history, these topics may help you make your choice. The information spans the community of the 11th century to a described hiking stage with a river ford.

History and Architecture

The Pergamena Montaganese was issued in August 1039 by the princes of Benevento, Pandolfo III and Pandolfo IV. It shows that Montagano was already established as a free community at the time. Another historical trace remains a hypothesis: it links Montagano to the ancient Roman municipium of Fagifulae, which Pliny mentions in Book III of his Naturalis Historia. This places concrete evidence of the town’s status at the time alongside a cautious interpretation of its Roman past.

The Chiesa dell’Immacolata, commonly called the Congrega, was built in the 17th century by the lay congregation of the Most Holy Name of Mary. A Benedictine monastery dating from 1134 once stood beside Santa Maria di Faifoli; it has since disappeared. This is distinct from the Complesso Badiale di Santa Maria di Faifoli, which houses a statue of the Madonna della Transumanza made entirely of wood. It depicts the Virgin Mary on an oak trunk, accompanied by two angels. These different points of reference offer several concrete ways to understand Montagano’s religious and architectural history, without confusing the former monastery complex with the surviving work of art.

The Palazzo Marchesale Janigro is also one of Montagano’s sights. Together with the Congrega and the Complesso Badiale, it adds named buildings and a work of art to the historical themes. The hypothesis concerning Fagifulae and the Pergamena do not tell the same story: one suggests a possible connection to antiquity, while the other documents Montagano’s specific status in 1039.

Local Tradition

The festival of the Madonna della Transumanza, known locally as the Madonna Incoronata, takes place on the last Sunday in April. The festival includes a public auction. The winner is given the honor of carrying the statue in the procession. The auction and procession thus combine a fixed date with a special role for the winner. If this tradition matters to your travel plans, keep the last Sunday in April in mind.

Woods and Trails

A distinctive tratturo, or historic transhumance track, runs through Bosco La Difesa and recalls the routes used by historic caravans. The forest served as a refuge and place of protection for brigands. Here, the landscape and local history meet in the references to the tratturo and the forest’s former use. The Percorso Celestiniano offers a way to explore the natural and cultural attractions around Montagano. Alongside the buildings, there are named points of interest for travelers interested in trails and the history of the surrounding area.

The Montagano (Chiesa Faifoli)–Limosano stage starts at the church and heads northwest downhill into the valley along a paved municipal road. After a few hundred meters, turn left onto a mule track that continues to a ford on the Biferno River. Conditions at the ford may vary; check them before crossing. Another named route is the Petrella Tifernina–Montagano stage, listed as 5.9 km long with a duration of 2 hours 12 minutes. While this stage can be described by its distance and duration, the route toward Limosano is characterized by its road surface, mule track, and river ford.

Getting There

The municipal directions for getting there were updated on December 17, 2024. From Campobasso, follow State Road 87 toward Termoli, then take Provincial Road SP 73A1DIR toward Montagano. Check road conditions and the route before setting out. This gives you a specific sequence for the drive, while the trails around Montagano are relevant to other aspects of trip planning.
