Nals: Discover orchards, churches and trails
Accommodation in Nals
Nals combines a village landscape shaped by orchards and vineyards with churches from different periods, a viewpoint and trails for hiking and cycling. Apple growing is the most important agricultural activity. If you are looking for a hotel in Nals, these different sides of the village can help you decide whether you would rather spend your time enjoying the landscape, exploring architectural history or taking part in outdoor activities.
Orchards, vineyards and apple growing
The orchards and vineyards shape the village landscape; apple growing plays the most important role in agriculture. During guided visits to the orchards at Grieserhof, guests learn more about the work behind apple production, traditions, old equipment and modern technologies. The visit focuses not only on the apple as a harvest product, but also on work processes, established practices and technological development. Dates are scheduled for the guided visits; check the current program in advance.
Churches and architectural history
The parish church of St. Ulrich was founded in the 12th century by the Monastery of St. Afra in Augsburg; since 1910, it has been the parish church of Nals. Stachelburg Castle offers a different architectural accent: the building dates from the early Renaissance of the 16th century and was converted into a traditional wine cellar. In the hamlet of Sirmian, the Church of the Sacred Heart was built in 1843; its Baroque altar is dated 1713. The construction date of the church and the dating of the altar should therefore be clearly distinguished. In Obersirmian, the Church of Santa Apollonia stands on a distinctive porphyry hill; it was built in the 12th or 13th century. The Chapel of Santa Croce is about a 15-minute walk from the village center and is already mentioned in the parish archives of Tesimo in 1713.
Viewpoints and a hike to the castle
From the Burgstalleck viewing platform above Nals, the panoramic view takes in the Adige Valley, the surrounding orchards and the mountain scenery of the Southern Alps. If you would rather plan a hike with a specific destination, you can take the route from Nals to Katzenzungen Castle: it follows trails 2 and 17 through apple orchards to the castle. Bus route 216 from Prissiano to Nals is an option for returning from the hike. Check the current timetable before you travel. The options differ for day planning: Burgstalleck is a viewpoint offering a panorama; the hike follows signposted trails to a specific castle destination.
Cycling in the surrounding area
In the area around Nals, the Adige Valley cycle path runs flat alongside the Adige River for long stretches. The Via Claudia Augusta has only gentle climbs and is considered a route suitable for all cyclists. When choosing a route, you can therefore distinguish between the specific features mentioned: proximity to the river and long flat stretches on the one hand, and gentle climbs and suitability for all cyclists on the other.
