Plaus: Dance of Death, Nature and South Tyrolean Delights
Accommodation in Plaus
When choosing a travel destination, specific themes can help you shape your stay. Plaus combines art in the village centre and in St. Ulrich with a nature and adventure trail, a speck museum, and information for train and cycling trips. These highlights appeal to different interests. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether culture, nature, regional cuisine or cycling will shape your trip.
Art in the village centre and in St. Ulrich
The Plaus Dance of Death is an artwork consisting of 18 panels with a total length of 36 metres. Since 2001, it has been located on the cemetery wall of the Romanesque Church of St. Ulrich in the village centre. Guided tours and explanations of the Dance of Death are available by appointment. If you would like a guided introduction, be sure to arrange an appointment.
Another artistic highlight can be found inside the church: two Baroque paintings by Vinschgau artist Simon Ybertracher (1694–1772) are on display there. This allows you to see two different forms of art: the 36-metre-long work on the cemetery wall and Baroque paintings in the church. Plaus therefore offers culture-minded travellers more than a single artistic highlight.
Nature and regional cuisine
The Fröschlweg is a nature and adventure trail that introduces visitors to the world of frogs, toads and other amphibians. This gives it a different focus from the artworks and the church: here, amphibians take centre stage. If you are interested in nature, the trail offers a distinct theme to consider when choosing your stay.
At the speck museum in Plaus, you can experience the traditions, culture and culinary delights surrounding South Tyrolean speck; direct sales are also available. The museum complements the art and nature themes with a culinary connection to the region. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the current opening hours in advance.
Getting to Plaus by bike or train
The Vinschgau cycle route is a section of the Etsch cycle route and the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route. It mostly follows the River Etsch, passing the orchards of the Vinschgau; Plaus is located on this route. This gives you a clear idea of the route and its connection to the river and fruit growing, without making cycling the only possible focus of a stay.
Plaus also has a railway station on the Vinschger Bahn line. If you would like to include the train in your journey, take the timetable into account when planning. Together, the cycle route and railway station offer two different points of reference for planning your trip, while the Dance of Death, church, Fröschlweg and speck museum make it easier to choose activities based on your interests.
