Terherne is an island in the Sneekermeer. If you are looking for a hotel in Terherne, thinking about your holiday plans can help you focus on what the area has to offer: Would you like to enjoy water sports, stroll around the harbour, take a walk through the village or spend time at the beach? The local options offer different highlights and can help you narrow down the kind of trip you are looking for.

Water and island setting

The Terhernster Poelen lie on the opposite side of Terherne. The extensive water sports options in the area include sailing and canoeing. The annual Sneekweek sailing competitions take place on the Sneekermeer. For planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between them: sailing and canoeing are local water sports, while the competitions take place on the Sneekermeer each year. This means you can think of Terherne in terms of both activities on the water and the lake’s event calendar.

Explore the island on foot and walk along the shore

The Dorpswandeling Terherne starts at TOP Terherne, where parking is available. It takes you across the island of Terherne, which is also called Kameleondorp. The route therefore focuses on the island itself. At the harbour, you can stroll past the characteristic houses. The Sneekermeerzicht walking route has a different focus: it runs from Terherne along the shore of the Sneekermeer and through Frisian villages. One described route leads across meadows to Terkaple and then towards Terherne. The difference lies in the route: the Dorpswandeling goes across the island, while the Sneekermeerzicht route follows the lakeshore and passes through villages.

Kameleon attractions and the beach

The Kameleon Terherne boat trip lasts around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on whether you disembark on the island. At the Kameleonboerderij, Lenten has been recreated in a lifelike way. This gives the village two different Kameleon attractions: the boat trip and the depiction of Lenten at the Boerderij. Whether you disembark on the island determines how much time to allow for the boat trip.

The Strandje Snitsermar near Terherne has both a grassy and a sandy beach. There is also a designated shallow area for small children. If you are travelling with young children, you can take this designated area into account when planning a beach visit. The beach adds another way to spend time by the water alongside the water sports options.

A cultural venue in the village

Tsjerke Terherne is another distinctive local landmark, although its function has changed: it is no longer used as a church, but for special occasions such as weddings and concerts. Its current role is therefore quite different from its former use as a church. For orientation, think of it as a venue for special occasions, not as an active church.

Whether you prefer exploring on foot, are interested in water sports or plan to spend time at the beach, Terherne offers several specific ways to shape your stay.
