The village terp of Reitsum contains remnants of a church and a cemetery. There are also historic churches and monumental farmhouses, cycling routes, and a stage of the Klooster Claercamppad that passes through the village. The church suites at Bij De Pastorie Boutique Hotel also provide a specific accommodation option. Reitsum can thus be explored through its architectural history, terp landscape and routes.

Churches, terps and farmhouses

The former Dutch Reformed church, built in 1896, is located at Flieterpsterdyk 23. It is a hall church with a flat east end, a wooden façade tower and an adjoining sacristy. The term “hall church” describes the basic hall-like type; the flat end, tower and sacristy define the architectural form more precisely. The Hervormde Kerk van Reitsum was built in 1738. Several monumental head-neck-body farmhouses stand in the immediate vicinity of Reitsum’s church. The name of this farmhouse type refers to its division into a head, neck and body, helping to describe its form. Ds. J.J.A. Ploos van Amstel was buried beside his church in Reitsum.

The landscape context broadens the view beyond the village itself: Reitsum, Genum and Lichtaard are part of the Flieterpen, a group of terp villages in a low-lying area behind the salt-marsh embankment. Ferwert, Marrum and Hallum lie on this embankment. Reitsum can therefore be viewed both through its own village terp and as part of a regional group of terp villages.

Routes through Reitsum and the surrounding area

The cycling route “Fietsroute langs prachtige Waddendorpjes” continues to Reitsum after Jannum and identifies Reitsum and Ginnum as two of the four Flieterpen, or refuge terps. “Rondje Holwerd” runs through the hinterland and names Reitsum as one of the small terp villages where the terps are visible. The two routes emphasize different things: the first places Reitsum and Ginnum within the group of Flieterpen; “Rondje Holwerd” focuses on the visibility of terps in small terp villages.

Another way to explore the area is the fourth stage of the Klooster Claercamppad between Dokkum and Ferwert. It passes through Reitsum and is part of the Klooster Clearcamppad. Reitsum is thus also part of a route stage between the two places mentioned. When comparing routes, you can consider the particular places and landscape features each one highlights, without assessing the routes based on unmentioned time or distance information.
